Car Hire

by chris150157 Online Now Jun 13, 2010 at 2:58 AM

We are planning a trip landing in Orlando, and then driving down to the keys, our trip is about 5 or 6 weeks, starting in April,2011. Where is the best place and cheapest to get a car for that amount of time, as this is the first time I will be getting a car in US. Please advise, any help would be gratefully received. Regards to all Chris

Make sure you shop around. I have found the cheapest in the past to be my local travel agent but you should try some brokers www.holidayautos.co.uk www.economycarrentals.co.uk have both been good for me in the past from UK. If you pick up at the airport you are more likely to get a recognised brand name. I read reviews of above sites where cars were picked up downtown and then use local carriers which may be cheaper but less reliable.

I rent cars all the time in Miami but Orlando as Pedro mentioned is a little different. As always renting a car in a city location would save you a bundle of money since they add on an airport charge on a daily basis. some car rental companies have restrictions on the number of days you can rent, i think it is 30 days with AVIS but i am not sure. since you have plenty of time to check things out, you can look at the separate websites of the car rental companies The most popular budget rental companies are Alamo and Enterprise. then there is national budget etc and the usual ones, Avis and Hertz. If you can, rent from Hertz or Avis, they may be a little more expensive but the service is better. since you are not resident in the usa, please check whether your auto insurance at home or the credit card you use would cover the insurance. if you have to take insurance the rates would go up dramatically. sometimes as much as 100 per cent. but you must have insurance since florida has a very high rate of uninsured drivers. you can also look around whether there are cheaper deals in miami. all depends upon where you are flying into. the first tip is you would save money by not renting at airport locations.

Roundtrip longer term rentals will be cheaper from smaller firms, but the vehicles may be a bit older. Airport to airport rentals are generally cheaper than one way rentals with city drop-offs. You can save significantly with national rental companies when you reserve your rental well in advance, and directly from the company. Most do not require a deposit. Recently the best deals I have gotten have been with Budget Rental. Insurance can be an important and expensive issue. Good luck.

I use payless and their rates are about 20USD a day. Weekly rates are about 135USD or less. I used them several times I have been to Orlando to play golf in the area and South Florida in the winter and they were always spot on. It would be nice to buy a GPS in the States when you are here, they are great to use and find your way around the area. I am a good driver and always waive the extras, so it is 20usd a day with taxes and fees included. I think it was 15.99 a day plus taxes and fees that came out to 20 USD a day Cheers Tommy x.
