Hi! In febraury march I will probably go to Florianopolis for 2 weeks for celebrating the Carnival. It will be my first time in South America and I will probably spend half of the vacation alone...a friend should reach me the 2 weeks. My question is: is it dangerous Floripa?? I know that the big city in north brazil are quite dangerous and that if you don't pay attention it's very easy to be robbed...so, is it the same in Floriopa? Can I go out in the night peacefully? Of course I know that when you are abroad you should always pay attention, but there are some places where you should pay more and other less..how's floripa? Thank's! Mat

Hi I have visited Florianopolis before and felt very safe. It has a reputation as being one of the safer beach towns in Brazil. I think you will be fine travelling alone there, as long as you take the normal precautions every traveller should in a foreign place. Floripa is amazing, you will enjoy the beautiful beaches! Have fun.

Hello, My name is Melissa and my husband is Brazilian, he went to the univrsity in floripa so lived there for several years. I have traveled there as well and have found that as a general rule southern Brazil is much safer than northern brazil and the more remote areas in SC like santa isabel (pouplation 1001) and Sao joaquim are safer to live than my hometown. My kids pediatriction is from Brazil and agrees that Florianopolis is the most metropolition of all the cities in Brazil and it was also voted the best city to live in Brazil. I was shocked when I got there it reminded me of a mix of Sasn Diego and San Francisco. You have a skyscrapers next to farmland. Kind of trippy. In any case, be careful at ATM's and store your cash carefully...but I would say the same if you were going to San Francisco. The difference in Brazil is that the cops are more corrupt, if you get pulled over you can get out of it 9 times out of 10 by slipping them cash. So says my husband.. I personally wont reccomend it thou :-)
