Hi, I'll be travelling with a family of 5 and we wanted to go to Pisa, the mall and space. I was thinking of doing that as a day trip by renting a car from the city centre head out and then back. But I read about the ZTL fines etc and was abit confused. I understand there is a 2hr permit pass I can apply for, which will help me with the fine for the way out. How about they way back in? I mainly want to see the leaning tower of Pisa and am happy to skip the rest of Pisa, then head on to the mall and space. Is it feasible to get a car from the city centre? Or will I have problems with returning the car/jams? If not, does anyone have any idea how much is it to hire a driver? I know transportation can be cheap, but considering there is 5 of us, and multiple trips have to be made florence-pisa-florence-Montevarchi-taxi to the space-taxi to the mall-bus back to florence, I think this would probably work out to quite abit and may be more economical with a car for 5 people?
The train may be your best bet. I assume from your post you are staying in Florence? I am not sure what you are referring to when you say the "mall" and the "space", but I am no expert.

The Mall is in Reggello, a thirty-minute drive from Florence. There are shuttle buses from the city (which require prior reservation) and also public buses. Info in English: http://www.themall.it/en/ By 'Space' I assume you mean the Prada outlet? It too is nowhere near Florence, being in Montevarchi (accessible by train). Montevarchi is about 146km from Pisa, around 1.5 hours drive. You need not be concerned about the Florence ZTL for either of these, as you would not be going into the historical centre to access them. However, you should be concerned about the ZTL in Pisa, as it is pretty extensive and includes the area around the Campo dei Miracoli (where the Tower is). Map here: secure.comune.pisa.it/tzi/in... I know nothing about 2 hour permits, except to suspect that you will almost certainly have to park somewhere whilst you get one sorted out. It would be a much better option to park your car at Pisa airport (why not hire from there too?) and then take the LAM Rossa bus from the airport to the Tower and back. Bus timetable here: cpt.pisa.it/orari/pisa/linea... Click the stop name to see the times, click 'mappa' to see the route. You can use www.viamichelin.com to find route, info and estimated driving times but I think you may find it difficult to fit all 3 places into a daytrip (depending on how long your 'day' is...the hire company's policy will determine this, of course). I think you can expect heavy traffic around both Pisa and Florence, depending on what time you are passing through.
