Day tour from Florence to ??????

by madars Online Now Aug 8, 2011 at 1:47 AM

Hi to all, Been to Florence for short breaks quite a number of times and so we try to visit a village or city while on these breaks. I have now run out of options on which village to visit can anyone suggest what I am missing :) So far we have been to Pisa, Lucca, Greve in Chianti, San Gimigniano, Sienna and even up to the Cinque Terre. We travel by train or public transpor. Any more suggestions pls.

You have, of course, already been to lovely Fiesole? There's also Volterra, a lovely hill-town which is much less visited than San Gim. I've not managed to get there yet but will do so next time... Bus to Volterra from Pontedera (500) or Colle Val d'elsa (770) here: http://www.cpt.pisa.it/orari/extra.htm You can get the train from Florence to Pontedera (about 55 minutes) or take the non-express Florence>Siena bus and get off at Colle Val d'Elsa: sitabus.it/sita-toscana/Fire...

Why not Arezzo? It's a relatively overlooked but very pleasant town with a fine provincial art museum, some remarkable frescoes by Piero della Francesco, a Gothic church on top of the hill with some excellent medieval stained glass, and the remains of a castle, now used as a park. Also some very good dining to be had there.

How about Perugia? Just over 2 hours by train (10.75 euro). Or Assisi, around 2.5 hours?

I like Bologna. It's about an hour from Florence by train. I haven't been there in a while, but it used to be very non touristy. The food is good there, too.

If you like Etruscans, go down to Chiusi or Orvieto. Orvieto is more scenic, sitting on top of a big rock in valley, but I like Chiusi, too, because only a few German tourists seem to know where it is. Check out the national museum there, and also be sure to ask about touring the tunnels under the town that date from the Etruscan era. The restaurant Zaira is in the center of Chiusi. In fact, when we were there, it was the only place open after normal lunch hours, so it's a good thing that it's a good eatery. If the owner liked you, he would take you downstairs to the cellar where there were hundreds of wine bottles in the tunnels, and he would point out the Roman era floor tiles and Etruscan era floor tiles on the stairs going down. Alas, I see that he had the restaurant for sale in the last year, but hopefully, someone bought it to continue the tradition... Note on both towns: the train for Chiusi stops in Chiusi Scalo, a couple of kilometers away (since I had a car, I don't know about bus service to Chiusi itself), and in the case of Orvieto, there is both a city bus and the funicular (if it's running) from the train station area to the top of the rock. If you want scenery, Orvieto will be better...if you drink alcohol, be sure to have a bottle of Orvieto Abboccato, a white wine that they misleadingly call "semi-sweet"...it's not sweet, it's just not perfectly dry in that they leave a little residual sugar to give it a full mouth feel without being sweet...oh, well, try it yourself ;-) Bill
