Food Budget for Florence

by isabella1976 Online Now Apr 16, 2008 at 10:05 PM

Hi there, Can anyone tell me or give me a rough idea of how much to budget for eating out in Florence? As a rough guide for lunch just a sandwich/crepe from a cheap cafe or street vendor, and for dinner the cheapest kind of restaurant you can get, pizza places etc? For instance backpackers going through Europe, how much would you budget for per day on food? Thanks in advance, Isabel :o)

Plenty of pizza/panini places in Florence, but the caveat against eating in touristy areas applies here as it does in all the other places you have listed. Eat at bars/cafes/pizzeria rather than ristorante, and buy food for picnics as mentioned before. I have tips for Florence and Venice places to eat which will give you a rough idea of food/cost.

You can definitely find inexpensive places to eat in Florence. Sounds as if your tastes are simple (as ours are). You should be able to get by on around 25-30 euro a day per person. It is doable....enjoy Firenze and Italia!

I can do it for around 20/25 euros, as long as I have had breakfast at wherever I'm staying (but I don't drink much alcohol, maybe just one 'birra piccola') and depending on how many gelati I fit in. Eat a huge breakfast if it's included in the hotel price, then you don't need any/much lunch (you may also be able to appropriate fruit/biscuits etc to carry with you and nibble later on).

I was recently in Florence and on a tight budget as well, I found that the various mini markets that are all around Florence are the best way to go for breakfast, lunch, and snacks. They offer produce at local prices and the Cokes are are about 1 euro for a can, 2 euro for a bottle. Many of the mini markets have deli's and they will make you a fresh sandwich for 2 to 3 euro. As for dinner, just look for the places that offer set menus, they are the best value if you don't mind having a limited selection of what to eat. You will find most of the places with set menus around the tourist areas but usually not directly in the tourists, same with the mini markets, just explore the many different corridors of Florence and you will easily find these places.
