Car rentals to go to Chile

      Argentina Sep 20, 2015 at 2:17 PM

I am planning to go to Central/South Argentina moving by car, crossing into Chile in different points. I am not afraid to drive long hours, and I prefer to be able to stop when and where I like for taking pictures or just because I am tired, or to take the less beaten roads. I have been already twice to Argentina and took the rental car out to Chile a few years ago.

However, now I see this in Europcars conditions:

Cross border is only available into Uruguay at 82,64 USD and should be requested 72 working hours before the pick up day to with a copy of the drivers passport and licence. This is only available to Uruguay. If the permit is not requested before this time the driver can request it at time of rental; however they will need to wait 72 working hours and will need to collect the permit from one of the Europcar offices (it is not possible for delivery of permit). CROSS BORDER INTO CHILE IS NO MORE AVAILABLE DUE TO NEW LAWS IN ARGENTINA

Is this true? Other rental companies seem still to offer this option, or are the web sites not up to date? Thanks for any recent info and experience.

Also, any cheap rentals you might advice? Fiat Palio or similar, or if not too costly, Idea or small SUV/pickup, five weeks (is it possible to bargain on a long rental?)

    • How to get to El Chalten from Punta Arenas in March

by MlleElizabeth Online Now Jul 22, 2015 at 10:59 AM

Does anyone know how to get to El Chalten from Punta Arenas?
      1. Is there a certain bus company that runs that route?
      2. Does the bus run in March?
      3. How long does it take?
      4. Do you know the bus schedule?
      5. Do you know if I would need to purchase tickets in advance?

      Thank you!

by klaus1967 Online Now Feb 20, 2007 at 7:34 AM

      Hi all,

we are planning a trip to El Chalten in March 2007. We bought the useful book "Trekking in the Patagonian Andes" but unfortunately it does not contain any GPS waypoints.

Could anyone please provide us with the GPS waypoints for

      Laguna de los Tres
Campamento Rio Blanco / Poincenot / Agostini
      Glaciar Piedras Blances
      Mirador Cerro Terro

Thank you in advance ! Any hints for hiking in this area are very welcome.

      hello there,

i am staying in el calafate with 2 friends, and we plan on hiking in Fitz Roy for 3-4 days. we have contacted several tour companies, and they are charging ~$800 for a private guide. is this expensive, and is there a cheaper way of finding a group to join once we get to el chalten? i would prefer to go with a group.

short walks in Fitz Roy - El Chaltén area?

by MariusG Online Now Nov 9, 2003 at 1:51 PM

We plan a trip to Patagonia in January and I thought to stay, among others, in for a couple of days, and taking several short walks of 2-3 hours each. One opinion that I got says bad idea - all the area is steep, mainly for mountain climbing by experienced sportsman or at least trekkers in good shape; the other opinion says good idea, since there are plenty of easy walks, for all ages and fitness. What is your experience? Any advice will be appreciated.
