Thought there were nice beaches in faro

by Brandyvalhalla Online Now Aug 13, 2011 at 4:57 AM

Our travel agent planned our vacation with a stop in Faro for some relaxing on the beach time. Are there no good beaches in Faro? Other postings suggest this. If not, where can our family enjoy some beach time nearby?

Hmmm - it look like our Faro pages don't have much for tips on beaches. Hopefully, a local member will jump in here with good information but, just searching around on the net, it looks like there are indeed some lovely beaches in that area. The Faro beach is about 5 miles from the town, on a narrow island close to the airport. It is very popular with local people. There is a fairly frequent bus service from the city centre during Summer, they do run all year but not as often after 10th September when the schools return to lessons. It has its own website http://praiadefaro.com/ which has some good photos although some of the links don't seem to be working. The site is only in Portuguese. Other beaches are quite a long way distant in the resorts favoured by visitors from other countries, eg Vale do Lobo, Vilamoura, Albufeira.

when i went to faro in 2008, where we were situated (where the bus drops us off in the main town) there were no beaches. there were rocks and some boats on an inlet but no place to sit and soak up the sun. it's more of a small port or docking area, it seemed.

Yes, I should have specified what I meant by "beaches in the area"- they're not far away but just not right in town.

You can take a boat in the city to go to the beaches, here's a site http://www.ilha-deserta.com/home.php

Indeed Faro has some good beaches For the most part tho they're all out of the way (not walking distance from the center) and involves taking the ferry to a specific ilha (sand-spit island) except for Praia de Faro, the town beach to where you can take a bus (#16) but this place is way too overdeveloped and overcrowded for one to have a really pleasant time Better to head out to one of the sand-bar islands dotting the coast of Faro: Ilha da Culatra, Ilha de Berreta, Ilha Deserta and Ilha da Armona (my favorite in Faro), all of which can be reached only thru a ferry. Armona is farthest and taking almost an hour ferry ride but worth it with its long sweep of beautiful sand and a tranquil atmosphere with just a few residents mostly fishermen and some obligatory shacks serving quick meals and refreshments.

Faro, as with the rest of the eastern Algarve, is protected from the Atlantic Ocean by a network of large barrier islands. This is where the beaches are. To the best of my knowledge, there are only five points in the entire length where you can access without a boat. While the one at Faro is overdeveloped and spoiled to some extent, there is another just east of Santa Luzia, which is wonderful, but you need a car to get there. Hope this helps. Enjoy your holiday!
