Transport To & From

I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for the following 1. Ways to get from either Athens or Istanbul to Macedonia. We were thinking of taking the Balkan Rail? 2. Ways to get from Macedonia to Italy. Is there a ferry from Albania or Croatia? Is there a rail or buses from Macedonia to places we can get a ferry? We would like fairly inexpensive methods, but also safe and time-efficient. Thanks!
