Cell phone for multi-Europe trip?

by dantm Online Now May 28, 2012 at 11:36 AM

Hi, I have an European GSM phone and will be there on a multi-country trip. As such, I'd like to get a SIM card that I can use across travel to a number of countries -- Hungary, Czech Republic, Austria, Romania, Poland. Any idea of what's the best way to do this? Are there companies that offer 'Europe'-SIM cards that can be used in multiple countries without outrageous roaming charges? I'd like to have phone access and basic Internet on this package if possible. Thank you!~

So long as you are in an EU country, roaming rates are strictly regulated and the outrageous roaming charges we North Americans are used to do not apply there. I used a German SIM card (blau.de)daughter had from a trip to Europe late last year on a recent trip to Italy. It was a combo talk / data plan. It was far cheaper than the rates I pay when I get out of my "home" zone in Canada. Check out the EU website for rates: ec.europa.eu/information_soc... I believe that they have recently ammended the regulations and the rates are even lower.

I think it is necessary to know which of these countries you would be arriving in. The previous answer seems optimistic to me, as roaming charges from where I am in Europe still seem pretty high, and that is for telephony only, data services are even worse. In addition, you won't be taking out a contract with a local company (as you aren't going to be a resident), which is easier to subject to rules and regulations, but purchasing prepaid card(s), where I guess you will want the possibility of top-ups in different countries.

Vodafone is one company in Europe that might have what you need. Check their website.

My phone provider charges me2.00/minute roaming in Europe,0.75/ text message and0.03/KB of data. I can buy a "roaming package" which costs15 -20 and get discounted rates. The roaming charges of0.15 or so I was paying with a German SIM card in Italy was downright cheap compared to the roaming rates my phone supplier charges.

Voice roaming within the EU (but not Switzerland and Norway) is regulated, at the moment 35 Cent for outgoing and 19 Cent for incoming calls. The "3" Network Austria doesn´t charge roaming costs with the sister companies in England, Italy, Denmark and Sweden. drei.at/portal/de/privat/ser... (german only) If that is similar with Italian, English etc. Hutchinson 3 companies ? Vodafon, T-Mobile etc. have holiday roaming packages, but probably not for pre paid cards… Data roaming is so far not regulated and allways expensive.
