There are lots of trendy clubs in Barra. The first upscale ones that come to mind are adjacent "nuth" on Avenida Armando Lombardi.

Cariocas are passionate about their samba, and you really should explore some of the clubs where you can join the locals dancing samba gafiera, clubs like Carioca da Gema. That said, there is a salsa scene in Rio. A good starting point might be to contact the studio of well-known dance teacher Jaime Aroxa, which has a monthly salsa party and should have info/schedules for other venues in Rio. For jazz, I suggest starting at TheMaze club in Tavares Bastos, next to the very well-informed expat owner's pousada.
