Things to do in Cancun with a Toddler

      Cancún Mar 10, 2015 at 1:49 PM

I saw a previous posting about "excursions with a baby" but I am hoping Cancun experts will be able to weigh in on some activities we are considering with our toddler. We are going to Cancun for 5 days (before heading to Tulum for a wedding). Some things we have thought about doing with our son who will be 20 months are:

      - Isla Mujeres Day Trip, Underwater Museum and Tortugranja
      - Garrafon Natural Reef Park
      - Xcaret
      - Hummer Jungle Tour
      - Marine Turtle Observation
      - Aktun Chen, Akumal
      - Wet n Wild
      - Cancun Interactive Museum
      - Crococun Zoo

I am wondering if any of these are "tourist traps" worth avoiding, and if something is a must. We plan to do one activity a day as our child is very active and likes to be outdoors doing something.

      Thanks for any insight.

    • Private Excursions vs. Group Excursions to the Mayan Ruins

      Cancún Mar 6, 2015 at 7:57 AM

Hi, I am going to Cancun soon and I was wondering what kind of tour company to use and looking for some suggestions of trustworthy tours to the Mayan Ruins (Tulum, Coba or Chichen Itza). I see that there are small private minibus tours for what looks to be a similar price as the big group bus tours. I would prefer that way because of the flexibility. My husband and I have been to Cancun 2 times before but our kids haven't and we want them to have a more authentic experience. I speak fluent Spanish if that helps. BTW, I don't want to deal with renting a car.

    • Family of 6 moving to Mexico City- Need advise!

Mexico City Mar 1, 2015 at 12:24 PM

Hi all, we recently found out my there is a high likelihood we will be moving to Mexico city for a US Gov job at the Embassy. Though we are extremely excited for the adventure we are also a family of 6 with 4 school age children and I want to gather as much information as possible. We would be living there for 2-5 years. I have been told that many US Embassy employees live in Polanco but that it is a very "plastic" place. Condessa I hear is very nice as well. I want to totally be a part of the city and culture, my husband is Mexican and I am Peruvian/Spanish so it will not be a culture shock to us but I want to make it as easy a transition as possible for our children. I also have been told the children of US embassy employees go to private schools that are very demanding. We have been given a housing allowance up to $3500/usd a month, what type of home will that afford us? And how about vacation spots close by? We like to vacation a lot and would want to take advantage of being so close to Cancun and Acapulco. Any insight as to what to expect for a US family living in Mexico City (specifically US Gov employee) would be so helpful! Thanks in advance!

      Loved Mérida, where to next?

      Mexico Mar 5, 2015 at 2:48 PM

I just got back from spending an absolutely amazing week in Mérida, and even though I've only been back home for a few days, I'm already thinking about going back to Mexico to see more of the country. So what would be your suggestions for great places to visit in Mexico? I'd rather avoid Mexico City and places filled with all-inclusive resorts such as Playa del Carmen. I hear Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende are nice to visit? I'm looking for safe destinations that are relatively easy to get to. Culture, history and nature (hiking) are my biggest interests, not having access to the beach is not an issue. So, any thoughts?

6 days traveling from D.F. to Guanajuato, San Miguel Allende, Guadalajara. Is this to much?

      México Nov 10, 2013 at 4:34 AM

      Hi there from Portugal!
I had an amazing time in a trip to México' 2012 (D.F. > Oaxaca > Palenque > San Cristobal de las Casas) and I'm going to return in the second half January 2014!

My plans: 2 weeks. First one: arriving México D.F., fly directly to Guanajuato > San Miguel Allende > Guadalajara.
Second week I will fly from Guadalajara to Cancun; I want to Tulum and some other places (didn't "study" yet this second part of the trip).

I Need your help, please, in the first part of my plans. How many days in each place? Should I cut some of them? Or is it good like this? Do you suggest some B&B or Hostel (medium budget). Cleanliness is everything and also the location. Don't need luxury, just a good spot to sleep.
      Thanks in advance!

Also, I will be glad to help you in the other places of Mexico I've been! ;-)

      Opening Hours in Teotihuacan

      Teotihuacán Aug 24, 2012 at 10:42 AM

      Hi there,

A few of us office mates will be in Mexico city in few weeks time for work. We are really keen to visit Teotihuacan. Unfortunately, due to tight work schedules, we discovered that we only have one entire morning as we need to be back in Mexico City by 2p.m on the same day.

As such, our current plan is stay at the closest hotel to the site the night before so that we can visit the place as early as possible in the morning and maximise our time there, possibly with a guide to bring us around.

I've checked few websites, unfortunately, there seems to be different opening hours mentioned on it. Have few websites which states 9.00 a.m, one which states 8.00 and there is one which states at 7.00.am.

Anyone knows exactly the actual opening hours of the site? That will help us in planning our short time there: Would be great if it opens early.

Further, can anyone recommend a good place to stay which is really close to the site?

      Thanks

      Teotihuacán Jun 15, 2011 at 7:21 AM

      Hi,
I am going to Mexico in 3 weeks and have a 12 hour stop in Mexico city. I would like to use the time visiting Teotihuacán. I have seen several places where people recommend to hire a taxi for a day/5 hours in order to get there and back, but I was wondering if it is possible to take a taxi from the airport to Teotihuacán, let the taxi go and then find a new taxi when we want to get back to the airport?

If it is not possible. Do anyone know how much it costs to hire a taxi for a day/half day?

San Cristobal via Chetumal or Campeche?

      México Sep 23, 2010 at 8:00 AM

We are a gay couple and we have only 14 days in Mexico at the begining of December. We fly from London to Cancun, but we prefer to travel around (perhaps even up to Oaxaca) than stay at an all-inclusive by an artificial beach.
Our list of "want to visit" is already almost unrealistic, so we are very open to suggestions about what is better. So, one of our main questions is: Is it better to travel to San Cristobal via Tulum/Chetumal or via Campeche?
Also, would it be better to spend a few days in Isla Holbox, or Cozumel?
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

How much time should I calculate to drive to the park coming from grutas de Cacahuamilpa or Malinalco . Opening times ? We have our own car.
What is the lodging about ? Must I make a reservation? Do they have any services or is it just a place to sleep?
Will it be crowed in November ? (foreseen date Fri Nov. 20th)
What will be the driving time from the crater to Metepec(Toluca)?

Where to go in Northern Mexico?

We probably would only be there for a couple of days. We live in Texas and haven't every really been to visit the neighbors so to speak. She's been to Nuevo Laredo but that's it. It will take us about 8 or 10 hours to get to the border so we wouldn't want to go TOO far into Mexico. I looked at some info about Monterrey but its a bit far and a bit...big city. What would you recommend?

      Teotihuacán Feb 14, 2007 at 12:38 PM

      Hi,

My wife and I have a 9 hour layover in Mexico City this summer on our way home from our trip to Peru. I've always wanted to visit Teotihuacan, but I'm wondering whether it's feasible to do it in our window of opportunity. We land at 6:00am. I've been able to determine that the site opens at 7:00am so my thought was to just go outside the airport, grab the nearest taxi and head straight there. Does anyone know how much it would cost to take a taxi? How far is the site from the airport? Will there be taxi's at Teotihuacan when we're done touring the site or will I need to call to get one to come out there ... or just take a bus back? Is there a bus that leaves from the airport straight to Teotihuacan? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
