I loved Essaouira, and I felt completely safe there. (Although I'm old, instead of young and cute, but you should be just fine.) It is small and easy to walk around in. You will probably spend a lot of your time inside the walls at the shops and restaurants, and there will be people around. Just use good sense like you would anywhere else. Dress modestly, and don't wander down deserted alleys at night by yourself. I can't help with the hostel, etc. because that isn't the way I travel. As for weather, in March - Average high = 65 F; average low = 55 F (18 & 13 C.)

Jessie has good advice - if you respect the culture and ways of the country you are in they will respect you. It is just common sense - you wouldn't wander around in the dark on your own in a unknown place even in your own country. You don't say if you are going by yourself or with a friend. Morocco is a wonderful country - Have a great time, take great photos and create a great travel page when you get back.

I've just had a look at the hostel and it is very well placed, just off the main thoroughfare of the Medina in Essaouira where all the shops and restaurants are, so you should be completely safe. Just heed the advice of the members above. BTW, Hostelworld has a very good opinion of this hostel (this, for your parents). Essaouira is an open friendly town and you should have absolutely no problems whatsoever. Good luck with your trip.

Hello, With regard to your safety, your parents have no need to worry, Essaouira is as laid back as you will get in Morocco. As said the Essaouira Hostel is in a good location and the people who run it are very helpful. I have lived in the Medina for 5 years and have witnessed all kinds of scams, but if you have little money to spend I am sure you will be able to avoid this activity. The Hotel Chakib has basic rooms with shared bathrooms from 60Dh to 80Dh per night. It really is basic but cheap. The weather at the moment is very wet, with rain showers everyday. If you need more info.....let me know

Hi -- I love Essaouira, I come as often as I can -- and also as a woman alone I have always felt like it's a really calm and safe place. Just use common sense, like you are adviced, and you will have no problems. A very nice and cheap place to stay is: Riad Chez Brahim in Rue Murabitin, near Bab Marrakech. You can book here: chezbrahim.com/essaouira-hot... -- a room with shared bathroom should be about 100 dh (10 euro) pr night. It is a modest but very nice place -- and the atmosphere is really fine. The people working there are so nice and helpful. I now have my own apartment in Ess, but before that I always stayed in Chez Brahim, it was like my secomd home !! But -- I guess there are many other nice cheap places. Just relax and enjoy !! --- And tell your parents not to worry. Hanne, Denmark

All the above advice is very good and solid but a little tip about Moroccan men. They are charmers and do go for western women. Here it is just common sense (same as the tip about not walking small alleys alone after dark - as not to worry your parents too much)Tell them straight up if you want to be left alone. You will be whistled at, you will be called "gazelle", you most likely will be asked for your tel within 5 mins at some point and they will offer to be your "habibi" (sweet heart). If you do not feel comfortable join other travelers, ask the person to leave or go into a stall and make clear to others around that you don't like the behaviour your of that person. This should by no means put you off but just let you know a bit more of what can be expected. You can always say that you wish to be treated as a sister nothing else (if that is what you want) and it will bring the point across as the men are very protective of their sisters in morocco. Have a great time.
