I have 2 nights to stay in either Erfurt or Weimar in the middle of June, en route to Frankfurt, which one would anyone suggest as the best spot please.

Erfurt. It's got a beautiful centre, is larger than Weimar and there's lots to see. Weimar is also nice, but it's an easy trip from Erfurt and perfectly doable in a day or even just a few hours.
There are several pages about both Erfurt and Weimar here on VT, have a look at them to decide.

I haven't been to Erfurt, but would have no hesitation recommending Weimer, because of it's cultural heritage.

Goethe and Schiller are linked with that city, as is Liszt and I would expect that there will be some special events as 2011 is the 200th anniversary of his birth.

The Bauhaus School also has its roots in Weimar.

Weimar if you're into Schiller and Goethe, parks and castles. Erfurt if you're into a more lively city with beautiful old town and churches.
