Hi all, I'm taking some american visitors to see stonehenge in July. It's their first time in the UK. We're driving out from Bournemouth via Salisbury I think. Can someone recommend a really quaint village on the way, or close by to Stonehenge, where we could stop for a pub lunch and see thatched cottages etc. A really atmospheric pub recommendation with good grub would be really helpful! Also, is Avebury worth a visit... we only have one daytime to do this so want to take in as much as possible without spending all day in the car! Many thanks, Karen
Avebury is definitely worth a visit in my opinion - there is more to see there than at Stonehenge. The manor is also worth a visit. The Red Lion pub in Avebury does good food - although it can get busy.

Avebury is absolutely and most definitely worth visiting, and is indeed very 'quaint'...you won't find many villages set within a vast prehistoric stone circle! It also has a couple of excellent museums...and you should make sure you take in both West Kennet longbarrow and Silbury Hill whilst you are 'doing' Avebury and Stonehenge. The whole area is a prehistoric 'sacred landscape', with barrows and tumuli, earthworks and processional ways (many of their tones are not lying buried...Stonehenge is just one tiny part of it. Walk as much as you can. There are layby parking spaces for W Kennet and Silbury, and a National Trust car park for Avebury (not especially cheap, but don't let that put you off). There's a good pub in Avebury too, but both village and pub can get busy with visitors so it really depends on what day/time you are there.

We did a day trip to the area. Before we went I looked at the Constable picture of Salisbury Cathedral in the art museum in London. We stopped at Salisbury Cathedral where you can see the Magna Carta I think. We had lunch there (not terribly quaint but you can see the Cathedral spire from inside the lunchroom), and then went up to Old Sarum just for the view of the Cathedral from there. Then we went to Stonehenge and ended up in Avebury which my relatives that I was traveling with liked much better than Stonehenge.

Here's another vote for Avebury as a must-see, even if it means giving Stonehenge a miss.

Avebury is a real must as one can see many more stones, walk around them, touch them etc. Stonehenge can be seen from the road and it's enough of a sight that way. If you Google Avebury and see some photos, you'll know what I mean. :-)

we were thinking of doing a drive by of Stonehenge, then on to Bath for a mooch, then come back via Avebury and Salisbury Cathedral... it's so weird playing tourist in your own back garden! Thanks for the advice.

If you want quaint villages in the Salisbury area you need to drive towards Stonehenge along the Woodford Valley - see http://goo.gl/maps/uvge for the route. There are also acouple of nice pubs along there too. P-t-B
