Is El Paso 'safe' for a day and night trip?

by maxcat16 Online Now Apr 11, 2011 at 12:43 PM

I know this is probably very rude to El Paso residents - but we live in UK and only hear the stories about Juarez - so just want to double-check.

We are likely to be passing through southern New Mexico and El Paso on way to Big Bend - we'd like to spend the night in El Paso but only if it isn't too edgy eg to go out to a bar in the evening etc.

Grateful for advice!

Thanks

J

My sister in law lives in El Paso, and the violence across the border hasn't really affected them. That being said, do not cross the border!! Juarez is much too dangerous to visit - day or night!

Agreed, as long as you don't cross the border you'll be fine.

    as bob dylan wrote

when you're lost in the rain in Juarez and it's easter time too
and gravity fails you and negativity won't pull you through

apparently it almost never rains in juarez

I believe that is called writers prerogative. lol I don't even know if Bob Dylan feels rain or even reality. It does rain in Ciudad Juaraz. Not much, but is gets rain with the most measurable, still not much, coming in July, August and September. :-)

I was recently told by person "in the know" that El Paso is one of the safest cities in US while Juarez is probably one of the most dangerous in the world at present. Go figure how this can be. You will be fine in El Paso BUT I agree with other posts - Dont cross into Juarez.

I think you'd be better off in Las Cruces, about 40 minutes from El Paso. Not because of safety issues, but because El Paso kind of sucks. I've tried to give it many chances, and there are redeeming features, but overall it's just not a good city for tourists. Especially if you want to go to a bar. Aside from the college places, there are lots of dives and a few restaurants (including a decent brewpub).

If crossing into Juarez, then highly suggest you dine at Chinese Restaurant called "Shan-gri-la. My friend "GUSTAVO" "s family owens the place and is the BEST on the whole Border. Ask for him. Say you herd it from me 'Julio" and say hello for me.

I go every year for my Dads side reunion, nothing dangerous to me. Except, as I hear; going across the border, its easy, don't go. A new place we just heard about, just opened and we just went to that is an eclectic eatery and bar and open 24/6 is Star City Kitchen and Bar. Its on Mesa near hospitals and a college (I think) and very good. So is it safe?; I think so, day or night alike. I like the prices on most things; coming from California it seems a bit less as you go east..... restaurants, fuel and motels.....don't be scared. Just came from Big Bend too, great spot and scenery; we stayed at the Wild Horse Ranch, great price, full kitchen and great desert sunset.
