by dila Online Now Oct 31, 2009 at 8:48 AM

Hi as i am a tramdriver myself and have some friends / collegue who collect tram things i promissed to bring some with me. So were to find a bit of kwality tram things in Cairo. I probably will not have much time to shop or are the shops open late? Is there a tram museum? Also i would like to visite Memphis, Saqqara and dashur. I understand the cheapest and best way is to take a cab? But as a woman alone is that safe and how about the price as i red warning that when you there they ask more money for waiting or bringing you back. If i book a cab at the hotel (know it is more expensive) is it saver? or they still want more money? Anyone knows how much it will cost me? I hope i will meet some nice people in my group to share a cab with but i dont know now for sure. I booked a 5 star tour trough egypt as i have often problems with my tummy. Any save restaurant to have dinner already wrote a few down from VT tips. Thanks for helping me Dont know what hotels i will be in yet will hear it overthere :(

I was in Cairo on my own a few years back and booked a day trip to Memphis, Saqqara, etc through my hotel. Reasonable cost, good guide, small group, no fuss and a very enjoyable day. The Archaeological museum is very easy to find, right next to the Nile Hilton. Be sure to visit the Coptic Museum too, very interesting and usually very quiet.

No need to book a tour for the Egyptian museum - much better to explore through there at your own pace and make your own discoveries. You could easily spend all your spare time in there. Similarly, you can certainly get around other places on your own. If you do, I would suggest you get up really early one day so that you get a chance to see the city and villages getting ready for the day as you drive out - all the carts coming in to market, children going to school, etc.

Crossing the roads is central Cairo is an experience not to be forgotten, but it can be done. Just shadow a local. There isn't a tram museum (no trams in Cairo, altho there are trams in Alex) but there is a railway museum. I've written about it on my Cairo page: worth a visit if you like that sort of thing.

There's a great deal to see at Sacquara: so much so that it's now officially split into two sites withseperate entrances, ticketing &c. Thereisn't so much at Daishur: basically just three pyramids separated by lots of desert. But bent pyramid is definately worth a visit, and you'll need to make sure you actually get to get close rather than being parked up up the red pyramid and told to look at it in the middle didtance, which is what I saw being inflicted on a couple of coach parties. Poor dears had come all the way from Japan and all the got to do was photograph it from a distance with the light shining into their lenses. Organised tours can be a real rip-off.
