I am going to Egypt in December. I am prone to Tummy Bugs, which I get very badly. This is a trip of a lifetime,as I will be travelling with an Egyptology group. Can you recommend strong medicine for this problem? I have heard that Anitall or Entoseed is good, but not sure where to purchase this. Regards Tricia Evans
I got dreadfully sick in Egypt! I had the most lovely cab driver, who stopped along the road to buy me a present of the local fruit. I thought it was impolite to refuse, but I really regretted it. I eventually had to call an emergency doctor, it was horrible! Anyway, if you can find Imodium, it's wonderful. Have a great trip.

It is writen ENTOCID, the all pharmacies have them. The coast is only 2 LE and it is fantastic medicine. On the first sighn of the problems take 2 tablets at once, than continue by taking one in the morning and one in the evening. Have a nice trip:)

Absoutely CIPRO. IT works, I took one per day and had no problems at all. Once i went to Turkey and didnt have anything and got sick too..then someone told me about CIPRO and it really works. Only downside is you cant stay out in super hot sun too long because you can get a little rash, but i would recommend CIPRO.

To Prevent tummy upsets you could take a supplement called acidophilus. Its a friendly bacteria supplement you can buy from health food stores. For small problems you could take immodium but if that does not work then cyprofloaxin well definitely do the trick. You may not be able to get this unless you have a prescription but you may be able to buy it from a pharmacy when you are there. of course, you should follw te usual precautions-don't drink the water, avoid ice and ice cream and salads, only eat peeled fruit.

Talk to a good doctor, maybe someone who specializes in infectious diseases before you go. David

I went to Egypt 2 weeks ago and had no digestive problems at all. It was during Ramadan and I continued fasting (no food no water during daytime)while visiting pyramids and temples in Luxor! Drink plenty of bottled water, dont swallow water while taking a shower, brush your teeth and rinse your toothbrush with bottled water, no salads, no ice, no fresh made juice, peeled fruits only. Get some lemons there and have lemon juice as a natural antibacterial. I took Imodium with me but never used it. Entoceed is the best and you can find it at any pharmacy. Have a great time in Egypt!

oh yes, and buy some antibacterial hand gel (like Dial or Carex) and use it when you have been to the toilet and before eating.

Talk to your doctor. VT should not be a place to seek medical advice.

With all do respect the Ciproflaxacin advice is totally inapropriate and does more damage than help

Yes, and also IMMODIUM (also called Loperamid) will not work in Egypt! Had it with me everytime we went to Egypt. Eventhough I never experienced any trouble while eating and drinking everything, incl. tapwater, some of my family and friends did. They took Immodium without any effect. And BTW Immodium doesn't solve the problem, it only kind of paralyses the intestines so you will not experience the bad effect of an infection. I wouldn't use it for longer than 3 days in any occasion. When having the "Curse" go to a local chemist. They will know what to give you and it works! There are chemists in about every street, all over Egypt. Make sure to have some ORS with you to prevent dehydration when getting the bug. If no ORS around: a glass of Cola with half a teaspoon of salt will do the trick also. If you are sensitive to tummy problems I think it is quite hard to avoid in Egypt. Seems the money is responsible for a lot of bug tranfers. Having some anti-bacterial gel with you all the time is a good advice. Good luck, Dora.

Hello My doctor prescribed the CIPRO for the specific purpose. I realize it is a strong antibotic, but it works and wont do any harm in such a short time span as a vacation. No problems at all, no side effects ( except for rash a little bit, but i am very fair skinned). But no problems at all. I visited Israel last year and forgot my CIPRO and got really sick.....so now whenever I travel to the ME, i always bring my CIPRO, but people should check with their doctors to make sure its right for them.

The problem is that nowadays more and more bacteria are building up a defence against antibiotics. The more antibiotics are used the bigger the problem gets. There is a resistent bacilla for Tuberculosis now causing great problems all over the world. The MRSA bacteria is causing whole hospital wards closing down, etc. Taking antibiotics as a preventive medicin will cause mortal victims in the future.

I find that antibiotics give me stomach problems rather than curing them. Medicines like immodium are emergency short-term measures. And Egyptian tap-water is safe, just nasty. Washing your hands is very good advice. I'm sure this is a cause of a lot af problems.

What is ORS. Handwashing is a great suggestions people often forget this. WHen you refer to chemists are these legit pharmacies or local witch doctors ( for lack of a better term)

First: Egypt might be a third world country but the education standard is about the best in Africa and the Middle East! There are no witch doctors in Egypt, at least I never found them. There are some fortune tellers but only for local people. All the chemists are college educated pharmacists! ORS stands for Oral Rehydration Solution. It comes in sacks in order to be mingled with water. In Holland you can buy it in any pharmacy, chemist or store that will sell supplies for foreign country travelling.
