Hello, off to egypt in a few weeks and was wondering whether it is allowed to wear shorts to the monuments, and around cairo?? or is this frowned on. also, as i am going on a nile cruise, is it necessary to suit and boot (bow tie etc) for the evening meals or would smart casual suffice?? any help would be greatly appreciated!! simon

hi there i ve seen westerners dressed in many different ways , from half naked to completely covered, so you should n t worry about it to much.Obviously a woman that shows too much will be in the centre of everyones attention, and everyone would be staring at her. However that is really it, even though as for my modest opinion I would suggest everyone either male or female too dress modestly, as i believe respecting others customs is the first rule when travelling. bye and enjoy such a fantastic country

Basic Guidelines: 1. Men should wear pants or at least shorts below the knee with a t shirt 2. women should wear long skirt and shirt past the elbow or preferably a mans light cheap dress shirt (perfect) cheers jz PS: no need for a hijab unless you go to conservative areas like islamic cairo whereas it may make you feel more comfortable

John (from Oman), I just took a short look at your pages and it is hard to find the advices where you are refering to. Can you give us an adress of the page?? That way it will be easy to find. Interesting pages!!! Right now I do not have the time to read all of it, but I will in the near future. Salaama, Dora.

Simon, This is a question that will rouse a lot of different opinions! My advise would be: look at the local people! Do you ever see one waring shorts?? I doubt it. Tourists will and it is taken for granted, so you can do. Have some wide linen or cotton trousers and shirts. That will comfort you most and be respectfull. Be assure the local people will ware what is most comfy in the heath of Egypt, and that aren't shorts. Wide clothing of linen and/or cotton, even some layers over another, will assure some kind of cool flow. Good luck, Dora.

My husband did wear shorts some, but they are pretty long. I'd definitely not wear sleeveless. I'd say shorts are ok if they are pretty long, but like the last poster said, cool, light pants would be great, too. No one has addressed the evening wear - we were just on a short 3 night cruise and the dress was very casual. I'd say smart casual would be perfect.

Smart casual for the cruise nights, and common sense the rest of the day. As said above, wearing shorts (or anything that exposes too much skin) is just not wise. I would be more scared of sunburns than to be frowned on. Long, loose clothes made or cotton or linen and you'll be more comfortable.
