Hi, we are going to be in Egypt next March for the month. We will be going to most of the popular destinations, Cairo , Sharm el Sheikh, nile cruise from Luxor to Aswan etc. Thinking of going to Siwa Oasis via Alexandria and Marsa Matruh. Has anybody been to Siwa? How did you like it? Any info would be welcomed, thanks!
Siwa is GREAT, really GRRRREAT!!!: It has been one of teh most amazing places I've been, and for sure the most impressive in Egypt (I was in Cairo, Marsa Matruh, Bahariyya, Hurghada and Dahab). Life there is cheap and good, people is friendly and -still- devoid of that commercial frenzy of the big cities (which reaches its peak in pitiful Sharm El Sheikh...), and is completely safe to go around there (well, Egypt is actually very safe...but Siwa is safest). I stayed in the nice and cheap Hotel Yousef (US$ 1,20 per person), in front of the old Siwa city, and 50 metres from the bus stop; used to buy my vegetables for my evening salad at the market outside the hotel, and had a great time wandering around there. There are upmarket, extremely nice hotels for US$ 20 per person some 300 metres away, amid orchards and palm grooves, and the transportation of choice is by donkey cart (a 4 hours trip anywhere is about US$ 1, although I suggest giving the driver boy more than that, US$ 5 is a very good amount and grants you a lot of help from him, as he may obtain the "clearance" to photograph anywhere). If I ever go to Egypt again (very probable, though), I'll go directly to Siwa, spend2 weeks there, and then to Dahab for another 2weeks or more... Tell me if you need more specific information Daniel

Thank you everyone for your input. Michel - have been researching Dakhla and looks to be a nicer choice than Siwa. One problem I might have is that the Cairo-Luxor-Aswan-Cairo portion of my trip will not be independant (taking my parents) but my husband and I will be remaining in Egypt for an additional 2-4 weeks with Cairo as our starting point. Will Dakhla still work? Thanks again for any info, Anita
