Hello, We will be in Edinburgh in early June and have a few questions. 1. Is Kirknewton very far (as far as convenience) to main Edinburgh if we have a rental car? Is it easy to take a car into town or are we better of with a taxi? Is it very difficult to park in town? 2. We are trying to choose between 3 ghost tours: Mercat, City of the Dead, or The Real Mary King's Close. We have read reviews and they seem to be really mixed. We just don't know which would be better. We do not want any corny characters jumping out at us and screaming and such. We are leaning towards the City of the Dead since it also offers the graveyard tour, but if anyone has a suggestion please let us know. Thanks.
1. About 30 minutes, on a good day, which wouldn't be very often. Not terribly convenient. In fact, not at all as you would spend a considerable time going in and out, then have to find parking. Do not, repeat, do not, take a car into Edinburgh. Parking is almost impossible and extremely expensive. You could take the car to the park and ride and get into Edinburgh from there. However, park and ride closes around 19.00, I think. You would be better off finding accommodation at least within the outskirts of Edinburgh - perhaps Corstorphine - look for accommodation with either onsite parking or at least hope of being able to park on the street. 2. Sorry, no idea although I would tend towards Mary King's Close, if I had to chose. MKC is a different sort of visit, whereas the other two are much more of the walking tour type, around the streets.

Kirknewton - I'd try to avoid taking the car into the city centre. Parking can be expensive. In addition, the west side of the city (which is the Kirknewton direction) is badly affected by road works - laying a new tram line. Even satnav would not keep you right. I'd park at the nearby airport park & ride facility - the parking bit is free - and take the bus into town from there. If you get the right bus, it's quite quick - say 35 mins. My Edinburgh page has some tips I think. Ghosts - friends did the Mary King one last year & liked it, but that was for benefit of 2 teenage girls.
