Questions about photography in Edinburgh

by Jasonconga Online Now Jan 12, 2012 at 12:41 AM

hey ya'll greetings from the Black Forest in Germany! I'm headed to Edinburgh for a long weekend in 2 weeks, the primary purpose of the trip is to take photos of the old parts of town (if the weather cooperates), not necessarily the touristy parts but also parts where the buildings are old and could look good in black-and-white. What are some memorable streets for photographing such scenes, old stones, doors that have some wear and tear on them, maybe even some paint chipped off, etc? Also, I'll be couchsurfing most likely in the Leith part of town on Portland Street for two nights. Is that an ok part of town? Are there some places in that area for photography? Also down by the docks could be good too, I'm open to your ideas! I'll have time to visit one or two museums at most and want to visit a pub with a local crowd, maybe that has some traditional music playing. Where is a good place to try haggis for the first time? Is it worth it to buy a transportation pass while there? I arrive on a friday and have 5 or so hours to kill before meeting my friend. Are there lockers at the bus depot for me to drop my bag at? Ok, that's enough questions to get us started, thank you sooooo much! cheers! jason

Leith is a good area for historic photos as is Princes Street but also touristy. Try to get some pictures of Fettes College - the buildings are quite gothic - great B&W; great photos to be had in teh botanic gardens although not actually historic.

Anywhere will give you the photographs you are seeking - you just have to walk and explore and use your eyes. Do not confine yourself to the Old Town. The New Town has some wonderful architecture and detail. Yes, there are lockers at the bus station. Also at the train station.

Edinburgh is perfect city for B&W photography, so it's not very likely you'll end up disappointed. I'd start with the Old Town, but New Town is really worth checking out too. My favorite detail in Old Town are numerous closes - some of them are so narrow that it's easy to missed them. You can check this page: edinburgh-royalmile.com/clos..., with the list of all the closes (some of them are accompanied by photos as well) accessible from the main spots in Old Town. Maybe that will give you a couple of ideas where to start taking photos. I suppose the long weekend won't be enough to see everything, but I'm absolutely sure you'll enjoy it very much!

Jason, Edinburgh is a fairly compact city, and I think that you'll find your subjects more successfully if you walk everywhere. The New Town isn't 'new' in any conventional sense, just not as old as the 'Old Town' (of course). The NT has lots of impressive stone-built terraces and crescents, cobbled streets, all good monochrome stuff. I'd recommend a stroll along the Water of Leith, as there are some interesting, quirky buildings around it and of course Dean Village. For slightly more 'tatty' sights, head for the Southside and the sidestreets off Nicholson Street. No offence meant to the residents of the area!

in the so-called DEAN Village you will find houses like in the Mary Poppins-movie and it is just a few meters from the main road in a hidden sidestreet. The Royal Yacht Britannia used to be in Leith, just about 3km from Edinburg.

like in the Mary Poppins movie!??????? Not unique and can be found all over the UK. In any case, the MP movie is supposed to be London but is actually a generic skyline.

Guten Tag und Gruesse aus Dubai :-) For B&W photography, I think the Canongate (end of the Royal Mile) is lovely. Also, the cemetery on Calton Hill is fantastic for photography. For museums, there's the obvious choice of the National Museum of Scotland, near Greyfriar's Kirkyard. But I really love the "People's Story" and the "Museum of Edinburgh" down in the Canongate. These are 2 small free museums by the old Tolbooth, telling the story of Edinburgh's residents through the centuries... just regular people and their lives in the city. Haggis is served in pretty much every restaurant, cafe or pub. My husband tells of a particularly good haggis at "Dirty Dicks" on Rose Street. For traditional live music in a history pub, my absolute favourite is the White Hart Inn down in the Grassmarket.

If you have time Crammond on the coast is an Edinburgh suburb worth a visit - there are regular buses from the city centre. Good for photography here.
