Edinburgh Accommodation

by Seanie87 Online Now Oct 16, 2011 at 2:17 PM

Hi im not sure if anybody can help me but im staying with my girlfriend in edinburgh from saturday the 29th of october to the 2nd of November and was looking to book a hotel/apartment/guesthouse in the city center or reasonably close as we will have no access to a car. We would hope to spend in the region of €300/£260 on accommodation. We are first time visitors to Edinburgh so any tips on where to go and what to see would also be great and much appreciated aswell. Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Sean.

Some years ago I stayed at a hotel just next door to the Caledonian ( expensive). I can't recall the name, but it was right opposite The House of Fraser on Princes St. Great location. The rooms were fine with views up to the Castle. Had a good bar, great for people watching. Cost was fine and would meet your budget. I didn't book. just walked in the door. You can't miss it. On the corner looking back down Princes St. A short walk away beind Frasers is Rose Lane(St,) absolutely full of pubs, the whole street, amazing. But I did enjoy this hotel, a great full breakfast was included.

In terms of what to see there is the castle, of course, perched high on its rock. From the castle you can stroll down the Royal Mile to the Palace of Holyrood House. The Royal Mile passes by many of the sights of Edinburgh's old town - St Gile's Cathedral, John Knox house etc There are beautiful gardens called Princes street Gardens between the castle and the new town. The new town around Princes Street is good for shopping, eating. You can also climb up Arthur's Seat near Holyrood House for views over the city. You can go up Calton Hill to see the folly. There are several museums.

Try the Royal Terrace. Should fit the bill if you can get the right deal. http://www.primahotels.co.uk/royal/

That's it! The Rutland Hotel. Very nice. I did see it on hotels near House of Fraser but was unsure. The name did ring a bell and I'm glad you pointed it out. I loved it. Really nice breakfast, I asked for kippers but got smoked mackerel instead, terrific, really handy locaion. Although I did regret going to Rose Street doing a pub crawl I had to drive to St Andrews the next day with a whopping hangover.

You might also want to look at the Premier Inn on Lauriston Gardens. Its a 10/15 min walk to Princes St and its on the #35 bus route which is the cheapest (but not quickest) way to get to/from the airport.

We just stayed in The Sherwood in Edinburgh ( http://www.sherwood-edinburgh.com/ ) It was great and very inexpensive. It is right next to a bus stop so for 1.30 you can get to city center in just a few minutes.
