I know what you mean about the cost, each year we consider Edinburgh for New Year but the prices just go silly. A couple of summers ago we stayed at the the Old Waverley hotel which was really central and a decent price from memory - however it wasnt festival time. You could check with them though - www.oldwaverley.co.uk Something else has just occurred to me though - Edinburgh University (a friends son is about to go there). Before you book accommodation, make sure you can obtain tickets to the Tattoo - I think it may well be all sold out by now. Certainly consider the University of Edinburgh accommodation, although it tends to be booked out by groups. The accommodation is absolutely fine, although it is mostly all single room accommodation. The Pollok Halls of Residence is well-located. There's also Napier University. You might consider renting an apartment - just use Google to see what is available. Also, the National Trust for Scotland have an apartment on the Royal Mile, which couldn't be better located and it might be available. www.nts.org.uk There's also Eurohostel.

Hi! We were in Edinburgh just this past August, and found that any hotel or B&B is far too expensive during festival time. Instead, why not consider a furnished apartment? We stayed here and it was as close as you can get to the Castle (we listened to the tattoo from our window every single night!)... and yes, the photos do not lie: it's THAT close! It was also a lot cheaper for the week than any hotel would have been. there's a double room, a seperate bed in the storage room (a folded-bed), and a double sofa-bed in the living room. scotland2000.com/grassmarket...

Try Craigiebield hotel, Penicuik. 10 miles south of Edinburgh. Bus stop right outside hotel. Day tickets less than £2.50 giving unlimited travel around Edinburgh.

Whoops, yes, sorry, getting a bit ahead of myself - postal orders must be in by 8th November and order processing will start in December. However, great blocks are reserved for tour companies, etc. so be prepared for less than ideal tickets.

How about a seaside caravan park outside the city, but with good access by train/bus/car? Child might enjoy it. Possibilities would be Seton Sands, east of the city and on city bus route (#26), or Pettycur Bay in Kinghorn - in Fife, but on train line to Edinburgh. Alternatively, make me an offer, I'll go away for the week and you can have this place!

Hiya, greetings from adelaide, australia! Just been on the sscotland forum and seen that you (and friends/family) are heading to edinburgh august 2009. I am too! I am flying in from australia on the 17th august and staying until the 21st. I am then doing a Rabbie's tour of the west coast for 8 days until i get back to edinburgh on the 28th (evening). I hope you have a ticket to the tattoo..,.and if so, which night are you going? I've managed to get a ticket (amazing) for the 19th. I agree..accommodation is so expensive in august. I managed to get into frederick house which is on frederick street, very central...but not too cheap either.. for a single traveller costs around165 aussie dollars a night. I hope you can get to edinburgh!!

Hi Rachael, nothing booked as yet but as Iain suggested I might book Seton Sands which is like a caravan park but lots to do for the kids. Its within Edinburgh and Northumberlands reach so a handy location. I have been to the Tattoo before and it is brilliant, nothing like the bagpipes on mass to get you going ! jOOLZ X

Heat wave ! I should be so lucky. Today I couldn't get the car up the hill past my house because of the ice and snow. There has been blizzard conditions over most of the UK, worse than its been for a long, long while. All very nice and crisy white but a bugger to drive in. Joolz
