Long weekend in Luxembourg - Day trip options and other questions

      Luxembourg Jun 16, 2015 at 2:09 PM

Ok so here is the plan, we are still in the early stages of planning...
Two ladies in their 40s plan a 3 night stay in Luxembourg city this August. Arrival by train from southwestern Germany via Trier on Rheinland-Pfalz-Ticket + Lux. That gives us Friday afternoon and evening, full Saturday and Sunday, and Monday morning to play with. Either on Saturday or Sunday we'd like to do a day trip by public transport, preferably train, to one or maybe two neighbouring small towns in Luxembourg's countryside to see a bit more than just the city.
Interests: history/historical buildings, especially churches, generally wandering the city and getting a feel of its flair and architecture, a museum or two, perhaps a little shopping. Not into nightlife, but we appreciate cafes and pubs with outdoor seating (weather permitting), small cosy bistros and restaurants.
Not worried about language skills: German, basic French that covers the usual tourist needs, no Letzebuergisch but imagination to guess the meaning from German - I think we will get by.
Budget is medium - I do not expect Luxembourg to be cheap compared to Germany.

      1. Where to stay: Budget for accommodation is up to 120 € for a twin room, preferably including breakfast. Do I understand correctly that the central station has the red light district in close vicinity and hotels in that area would not be the best choice? I hope to find something in the old town. How about the quarters on the opposite side of the valleys? Any more areas that should be avoided? Any good hotel recommendations? Where to look for "3 nights for 2" offers, in case these exist?

      2. Day trip options: Any good tips? Since ancient churches are preferred to castles by my friend, I was thinking Echternach.
But I cannot find Echternach in the map of the train network on How to get there, is it by bus?
Same question about Vianden. Seems trains go no further than Diekirch.

      3. Has anyone visited the casemattes? Are these guided tours or do you go on your own? Worth it?

      4. The website of the tourist office mentions a tour of the city and illuminated ramparts on Friday nights: Worth it? Or can the illuminations also be seen and enjoyed without a tour?

There will probably be more questions when we go further into details.

      Dinant to Echternach + accomodation

by pepemorris11 Online Now Sep 7, 2008 at 5:10 PM

My husband and I will be leaving Dinant Belgium for Echternach. Unfortunately, i can't seem to find the cost of train 2nd class from Dinant to Echternach.
      1)Is there a direct train?
2)How much will it cost? one way?
      3) From there we will stay for 4 nights and head back to Amsterdam Central? Is there a direct train and how much for 2nd class?
The websites for train service in the Netherlands and Belgium only show cost for internal and domestic services.
      4) Does anybody know of a good B and B near the Echternach train station. We are an elderly couple and we would like to find budget accomodation near the staion. a budget hotel would also be fine. many thanks for your help

Hello, and thank you for your advice in advance.
I noticed there are not hotel/hostels type of accomodation in the tips area. That naturally brings me to wonder.. are there places to stay in the city so as not to have to return to Lux City?
