We are spending 2 days in Durango at the end of September. We don't want to spend a fortune on a hotel (Strater!) but have been told that the cheaper hotels are at the north end of town, and that area is not safe. Any thoughts on this? Recommendations?
I don't know that there's really a "bad" part of Durango. The hotels themselves are not great and the area is not walkable to the bars and restaurants in the Downtown area. You get what you pay for, and it's always important to remember that. But as far as crime concerns for that part of town, specifically, I think it's mostly unjustified. If you're concerned about it, there are also some cheaper motels on the south side of town, which is an industrial area and perfectly safe, just not walkable.
