The fastest route to Haast from Dunedin

by khalid48 Online Now Dec 6, 2010 at 4:30 AM

We will be going to the west coast, Franz Josef Glazier, etc, from Dunedin. Looking at the map, there are two possible routes. Which of these two is the fastest ? Going north, Dunedin-Palmerston-Ranfurly-Clyde-Cromwell-Wanaka ?
Or going south, Dunedin-Mosgiel-Milton-Roxburgh-Clyde-Cromwell-Wanaka?
Or is there any other fastest route ? From the map, the northern route passing thru Palmerston look shorter. But the shortest route may not be the fastest.

Thank you.

The southern route is 20 kilometres or 10 minutes shorter (409 compared to 429 km, both about 5 hours). So nearly no difference.

A third option would be not to travel up the coastal road to Palmerston but inland to Mosgiel and from there to Kyeburn/Ranfurly via Middlemarch. This would more or less follow the Otago Central Rail Trail to Alexandra/Clyde.

Both island routes lead through dry Central Otago land, the western one (via Millers Flat and Roxburgh, following an itinerary of old gold-mining towns.

The slowest route would be to use the Cardrona road between Wanaka and Arrow Junction, only there head east to Cromwell. It is 485 km long. Also a great drive, but it takes nearly 6 hours.

Another great route - but nearly as long as the one via Cardrona - is via Lindis Pass (spectacular) and Omarama through the Waitaki Valley (very interesting) to the coast (Oamaru). But as you seem to be in a hurry, I would rather not suggest to visit lovely Oamaru, go to the penguin colony, see the Moeraki Boulders and the penguin hospital at Katiki Point............ ;-)))

I would travel via Middlemarch and Ranfurly - but the other one is as good as this one, so just read a bit to find out if you wouldn't be interested to see some of the old (ghost) goldmining towns.

well we dont mind the scenery as long as we can reach Fox Glazier early. Probably we will stop at Wanaka for a couple of hours, then move on. We plan to start from Dunedin the latest by 7.30 am, so that we can check-in in Fox Glazier before 8 pm .
Do you think we can reach Fox Glazier in 12 hours ?, we will have a few stop to take photos at Wanaka, Haast, etc. Mind you there are 29 of us traveling in 6 cars /MPVs.

Net driving time (540 km) is about 7.5 to 8 hours. So you have enough time to stop, relax and take photos along the way.

The best tool to calculate distances and travel time in NZ is:

    aatravel.co.nz/main/td-calcu...

The top time on Googlemaps (6:20 hours) is quite unrealistic. I wonder if they think the Haast Highway is a motorway??

I hope you make reservations if you travel in a group of 29 people!
