Can we walk?

by Cantravel Online Now Jul 12, 2012 at 8:56 AM

We are on a cruise with a stop in Dubrovnik. We would like to walk the walls and are wondering how to access them from the port? I heard there is a cable car with amazing views. Will that get us up to the wall. Can we walk from the port to the cable car? Thanks

The usual way to access the Walls is to walk up a short flight of steps. These steps can be found from inside the Old City at a number of points - all very clearly marked. On a hot day it is a very exposed walk so do take water, sun protection and a hat. If you get tired or too hot you can leave the walk at the next exit steps. It is many years since I took the cable car up to the top of the mountain/very high hill that overlooks Dubrovnik and yes the views were great. It was not running last time I was there about 6 years ago but may have been restored now. If you are cruising on one of the very large ships you may berth in the Port just outside Dubrovnik - Grusz - and will need to yake the bus into the old town. Of course the ship may provide a shuttle bus. It is not far - journey takes 15-20 minutes. Unfortunately if more than one cruise ship is in port on the same day it will be very crowded in the town so be prepared for a bit of a jostle . But enjoy your visit -it is a lovely city!

Yes, I was there last year. Our cruise ship, Pacific Princess droppped us off and we had the option of a coach or walking into the city. Many people enjoyed the walk. Cable car...mmm...I can't remember a huge cable car but there was certainly some way of ascending the hills behind so that you can enjoy a good view. It was not in use when we were there. Of course, the surrounding hills were the huge problem in the wars: the enemy put artillery up on them and fired shells down into the old city.

I was in Dubrovnik last summer, and the cable car up to Srd is operating again. The valley and summit stations have been renovated, and the view is indeed spectacular. There is a also a war scarred fortress up there, with a small museum telling the story of the siege of mount Srd during the Croatian War of Independence. From the viewpoint of the Croats of course... Cruise ships visiting Dubrovnik often anchor in front of the city. The passengers are then brought directly to the old town using the ships' own tenders. I've seen this done numerous times and they really drop you off in the middle of everything, where you can start your walk around the city walls. The cable car up Mount Srd is a short walk from the old town, and it's signposted from the Ploča Gate if I'm not mistaken. Other cruise ships dock in the port of Gruz, which is away from the old town, but there is usually a shuttle bus organized to the Pile Gate, where you enter the old town. Bus line 1 also runs frequently from the port to the Pile Gate. So it all should be no problem at all...

If the ship is anchoring in Gruz harbour, which I thought most of them did, there are also local buses to the old town. From where the bus stops, just walk through the gateway and steps to the ticket office for the walls are on the left inside the entrance. You can also walk from the port to the old town, which I think would take about 30 mins from where the cruise ships anchor. The cable car is nothing to do with the wall, it takes you up a mountain outside (and looking down on) the city of Dubrovnik. You can climb up to the lower cable car station from the old town, see dubrovnikcablecar.com/?dubro...
