Places to eat and buy food in Dubai? Staying on budget.

by hermit2006 Online Now Jul 21, 2012 at 6:01 AM

Hello, me and my girlfriend are planing a trip to Dubai in December for about a week there. As none of us have ever been there and we know pretty little about the place, one of our main concerns is how it goes with the food there, places to eat plus supermarkets where we can buy food and prices. We are going to try stay on the budget there as we hear that is is abit expensive in Dubai. So any tips about supermarkets (what type of food they sell?), prices and cheap places to dine will be highly appretiated. If anyone can help with sharing thougts and opinions? Thanks, Daniel

Been living in Dubai for 7 years, no need to worry about places to eat, buy food, hotels, hostels.....plenty of things to do and see.....there are expensive as well as very cheap places to eat and stay. Trip advisor has a great info on hotels or hostels....Dubai has a monorail now so it is much easier to move around....avoid by all means summer time it is unbearable hot and impossible to walk around. Best time is from November to April. Have a wonderful trip!

you have plenty of cheap little street restaurants, especially towards the old center of Dubai. The many philippine migrant workers have a lot of smaller restaurants where they come to meet and eat and they are very cheap. I was in dubai last month and did not find that it was the food prices that were hard on my budget.

Dubai has a very vast range of hotels and restaurants depending on your budget so don't worry if you can compromise on luxury than you can have a cheap hotel and cheap food too I will recommend agoda for hotel booking you can choose cheap accommodation from there.

I agree with Cachaseiro. I too was there earlier this month and around the older part near the Creek, plenty of cheap eats - Indian/Lebanese/Iranian/Chinese/Malaysian. But also more westernised places = pizza, pasta etc plus all the main fast food joints if they are your bag. Supermarkets are numerous. If you have not booked accommodation, suggest you stay near the Creek in either Deira or Bur Dubai for easy access to the cheaper more interesting eats - the big western hotels attract the Pizza Huts and the like nearby,

Daniel, don't worry about food, you'll find more choice than you have at home with products from literally all over the world. Major supermarkets include Carrefour, Geant, Waitrose, Spinneys, Choitrams and they have all the foodstuff you're used to plus others you probably won't have seen before. As the others have said, there are thousands of restaurants/cafes all over the city, again including western franchise chains and fast food outlets (like McDonalds etc). The shopping malls have food halls for (mainly) fast food. In fact food in Dubai is very cheap - the local delicacy sharwarma sandwich is less than1, you can even get a meal in a five star hotel for less than20. Have a look at our Dubai pages here on VT for all the detailed info about our suggestions for places to eat and the cost. BTW, to get an idea of the supermarkets you could go to: www.spinneys-dubai.com/ www.carrefouruae.com/default.aspx?langauge=en&country=uae And just on a general point about Dubai being expensive for visitors - it's not for many things. Taxis are cheap, the Metro is cheap, bus fares are cheap, food is cheap.
