Trains run on Sunday/holiday schedule. Check connections on www.bahn.com, entering the date, and you'll be shown only trains that run on that day. Shops and supermarkets are closed, with the sole exceptions of a) shops inside airports and train stations, b) some tourist souvenir shops, b) some (not all) bakeries open for a few hours in the morning.

In addition to what Kathrin_E already said: It's a commuter train from the airport to the main station (S2) that takes roughly 20 minutes. Depending on where you stay you may also consider getting off at the station Dresden-Neustadt. Btw, there is a grocery store at that station which is open every day, including holidays/Sundays. Tickets are 2 Euro for one train ride. Valid one hour, changes possible - tram and bus are also included in that system. Group tickets are only available for the whole network (www.vvo-online.de) and too expensive in that case. You may consider buying a 4-rides ticket and stamp it once for each person - it's 7.20 Euro, so for four people slightly cheaper than 4x2=8 Euro. Only few tourist shops in the centre will be open. Like around Frauenkirche/Neumarkt square.

Thank you both for your replies. Please oblige me with one more question. From Dresden we head for Bayerisch Eisenstein, near the Czech border. What is the best way to save on the railway tickets? As mentioned, we are a party of 8 so my thought would be to train all the way to maybe Regensburg and from there buy a Bayern ticket to Bayerish E and we split into 2 groups of 4 to enjoy this ticket. Has anyone got a better suggestion? Cos I just checked the ticket to Regensburg and special promo is 49 Euros per person which is quite expensive to me.Is there a cheaper way? Also we would like to buy a return ticket as we will be returning to Dresden after 10 days to leave for home. Would that be cheaper buying a return ticket, that is?

Unnecessary! You can combine two Sachsen-Tickets and two Bayern-Tickets to cover the entire route for all of you if you stick with local/regional trains.

Sorry, but there's a problem with using Sachsen Ticket and Bayern Ticket. The small distance between the last stop in Saxony and the first stop in Bavaria (and vice versa) is NOT covered by those tickets. I've seen people getting fined for travelling on those tickets between Reichenbach (Saxony) and Hof (Bavaria). It is a trap set up by Deutsche Bahn. Since travelling Dresden - Regensburg is all on regional trains you can use the "Quer durchs Land" ticket. bahn.de/i/view/DEU/en/prices...

I've seen people getting fined for travelling on those tickets between Reichenbach (Saxony) and Hof (Bavaria). It is a trap set up by Deutsche Bahn. This problem is no more. The rules have changed. You can travel now with a Sachsen-Ticket and a Bayern-Ticket across the border between Saxony and Bavaria. The full conditions - point 3.2.3 2nd paragraph bahn.de/regional/view/mdb/pv... The price difference between both is however slim. 2 x Quer-durchs-Land-Ticket for 4 (EUR 60,00) = EUR 120,00 2 x Sachsen-Ticket for 4 (EUR 30,00) = EUR 60,00 2 x Bayern-Ticket (for 2-5) (EUR 29,00) = EUR 58,00 DB timeable reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/qu... Start: Dresden Hbf Destination: Bayerisch Eisenstein and select as means of transport "only local transport" Same for the return trip. You can buy these tickets on spot from ticket machines. Note the the above tickets are EUR 2,00 more each when you buy at the counter instead from ticket machines. QdLT ticket does really just cover regional trains (incl. S-Bahn trains). Bayern Ticket covers nearly all local public transport in Bavaria. E.g. also city buses and regional buses.

When staying in Bayerisch Eisenstein you will get a guest card (GUTI) which gives free public transport on the Bayerwald-Ticket area bayerwald-ticket.com/files/s... bayerwald-ticket.com/files/s... Covered is the Waldbahn (dark gray railway lines - but not into the "PLUS" area, i.e. Deggendorf and Plattling), the Oberpfalzbahn (blue railway line) and the shown bus lines in color. Good to know, abalada! That's really a change for the better for once. No ICE trains with those special tickets. However, between Dresden and Regensburg ICE trains do NOT run anyway.

These tickets are not valid on ICE, IC or EC trains. Tick "only local transport" when you look up connections on bahn.de.

    > Pardon me, but when you say regional trains, do you mean i can use only debahn trains or am i permitted to use ICE etc You can only use regional trains. No matter if operated by DB (e.g. RB, RE, IRE) or by other train companies (e.g. ALX, AG). As already said select as means of transport "only local transport" to see only connection you can use with the suggested tickets. Long distance trains like ICE and IC/EC are not covered by these tickets. To use them has for this trip however no real advantage anyway. Neither faster nor less train changes.
