Travel in May to the Dolomiti area

by scallens Online Now Aug 1, 2011 at 11:55 AM

We are planning a visit to the area in mid-May of next year. Kastelruth (Castelrotto) appears to be a good place to stay and venture out for day trips. Our main concerns are what the weather will be like at that time of year, will there be a good selection of restaurants open to eat in, will the cable lifts be running for accessing higher areas to hike, and will wildflowers be starting to bloom in the lower elevations. We will be traveling by car. Any planning assistance will be appreciated.

The winter season in the Dolomites generally closes after Easter each year, and the summer season does not kick off until the end of June until mid September.
The chances are that the resort of Castelrotto will be as good as closed in May.
There is very little chanve of any of the lifts being open, and there may only be one or two diehard hotels accepting guests.
As or restaurants, the same will apply.

There is absolutely every chance of snow being present above 1500 metres.
This is nor unusual throughout the Dolomites, in May.
I was in Madonna di Campiglio last month, where it snowed several times above
    1800 metres.
Castelrotto is somewhat lower, but not so low as to be snow free.

Great choice for a holidays in the Alps!
Have thought of trying the Marmolada area in the Belluno province? It's really beautiful there and if you stay around Malga Ciapela you can take take the cableway up to the top of the Marmolada. The surrounding are just fantastic and there are some lovely hotels there, too. The Garni' Roberta Hotel is lovely and they are very friendly.
