Brit new to Doha needs the lowdown on life out here

by EastLondonGirl Online Now May 18, 2007 at 12:59 AM

Hi all Just moved out to Doha and am still trying to get my bearings - and am finding it a tad difficult to get info on the following 1. where can i get a list of all the bus routes in the city and bus timetables? 2. I'm looking for the cheapest way to call London and other European cities - are there any pre-paid calling cards I can purchase, or are there phone shops I can go to?? 3. being new to the city I'm looking to make new friends - any ex-pat watering holes that are worth a visit? clubs that are worth joining? 4. I need to find a gym (road running in this heat is a definate no-no) - reasonably priced - any recommendations? 5. Are there any regular VT'ers based in Doha that would be up for organising a VT meeting in town - have noticed this is done frequently in Dubai and other locations? 6. Evenings and weekends - ex-pat listings guide anywhere or recommendations regarding where to go and when? Thanks loads ELG

Hi there, 1. Here's a link to see the bus routes: eng.mowasalat.com/site/topic... 2. Best place to buy the prepaid phone chip is through Qtel, bring your passport with you then fill out the application form. I believe the chip costs 200QAR preloaded with 100QAR credits. Its still the cheapest way to call abroad using your mobile granting you call during off-peak hours, other than that you can use Skype or othe VOIP servers. 3. Let me see, first stop will be the 'after work drinks' at the Four Seasons every thursday 6:00pm onwards. 4. Somebody I know said the Gold's Gym at the D-Ring is reasonably priced. The rest i know are at Doha Club or hotel gyms. 5. I havent to a VT meeting before and I dont know anybody here as yet that is seriously up to it. Count me in if you organise one. :-) 6. I'm not much of a party goer, being in Doha killed it. But parties at the Diplomatic Club or at the Paloma at Intercon are only some of the place my bosses go whenever she wants to party. cheers,

Hi, there isn't much to add more to what the other replies have. I like meeting new friends too, if you are fine with cup of coffee or beer let's meet. You may email me here or at newrose_spades@yahoo.com Best of luck

hi even i m new to doha. Well according to me the best way to call london is either to use skype or free call software. U can alos get phone cards from grocery shops all over doha city i think. Frinds thats not preety hard to find here if ur wrking somewhr. See i was in the Uk for my studies ( Bachlors and MSc and then i was in Isle of man), it was easier for me to make friends out there in the uk. May be u can also get some good frinds out here too. Visit cube at ramada, or go to Sheraton or movenpick towers on thursdays. Others=wisethe best way is to arrange house parties here in Doha. Join gold;s gym , isty best if u really wanna be fit. i ma a regular VTer in doha now and prpobably there will be many others too who are regular. One more theres on night on Nov 21 or 22nd at Ramada hotel. try to go ther and ladies its free b4 11pm. Hope i have repled something which can be used by u. cheers Bips
