From Cusco to Puno and back to Cusco in 4 days

      Peru May 9, 2013 at 9:43 PM

      Hi!

I'm planning a trip to Peru with my girlfriend. Our base will be Cusco and we still have 4 days free to spend. I was planning to use then to visite Puno.

I've searched but couldn't find any good info about the buses. Would you guys recommend us a "tourist bus"?

My idea was to get one going to Puno and a regular bus going back to Cusco. Is that a good idea?

Is there any place I can book and see the buses schedules so I can plan those days best? All buses websites I've found online lack such info.

      Thanks guys

      Lima May 8, 2013 at 9:29 PM

We are a couple travel to Lima in June, will rent private properties to stay. We'd just hang out in a neighborhood where it provides a lots of restaurants & cafes, also near beach. Which neighborhood should we pick? I heard about Miraflores, is that very popular?

      Thanks all!

Help planning 5 days in Arequipa and Puno

      Peru May 12, 2013 at 10:54 AM

      Hi guys!

I continue on my quest to make up a decent itinerary for my trip to Peru which is gonna happen 2 weeks from now.

After my Cusco itinerary taken care of, I need to decide what I'm gonna to with the rest of my time.

I'll take a night bus to Arequipa May the 30th and arrive there early in the morning of July the 1rst.

My plane back home leaves from Cusco June the 5th, in the afternoon.

      My rough plan is

June – 1 - Arrive at Arequipa, tour the city
June – 2 - Tour to Colca Canyon
      June – 3 - Titicaca
      June – 4 -
      June – 5 - Back to Cusco

I have a few questions I was hoping you guys could help me.

1 – I'm finding it hard to come up with a tour around Arequipe the first day. Do you guys have anny suggestion? Should I hire a tour or do it by muself? Also, is there any places you guys would recommend hiring at least a guide (such as Convento de Santa Calatina)?

2 – After the tour, on June the 2nd, hould I take a bus to Puno bu myself, sleep there and take a tour to Titicaca the next morning? Or should I stay ate Arequipa and hire a tour that leaves from there?

3 – I still have one day left. Any ideas what I could do with it? I thought I maybe could get back to Cusco em try a daytip from there. Maybe to the salt mines I've heard about. Or maybe try some daytrip to the jungle. Is there such a thing?

I'm used to organizing my trips by myself, but I'm finding Pery a hard one. Any help from you guys is much appreciated!

      Cheers!

      Backpacking-alone..

      Peru Apr 29, 2013 at 1:13 PM

Hi. I'm looking at backpacking Cuzco Peru and wondering if anyone can offer advice. I'm going solo and it will be my first ever time going so far alone. As a female I am worried but trying not to be so I am asking for some advice on the state of hostels, transport to and from the airport, getting around etc. Any tips that would yey or ney the whole trip idea.
I'm also contemplating Panama city as well. I'll be leaving from Calgary which does not offer much by way of all inclusives so again going to do the backpack thing. Panama I would like to see a beach so any ideas on how or where to go from the heart of the city would be great.

      Help witH Peru Itinerary

      Cusco May 16, 2013 at 11:19 AM

      Hello Travel Experts!

We just booked our international tickets to Peru and I need some help planning my itinerary there. We're getting into Lima on June 28th and will be headed back to the US on July 7th. Here's what I have so far:

June 29th- morning flight to Puerto Maldonado - 3 nights in Refugio Amazonas
July 2nd - fly to Cucsco (afternoon flight) - 2 nights in Cusco (tues, wed nights)
July 4th (thu) - stay in olly (SV sights, Pisac)
July 5th (Fri) - early morning train to MP, spend day in MP, stay in Aguas calientes - Friday night
July 6th (Sat) - train back to Cusco. Spend last day and night relaxing in Cusco
July 7th (Sun) - early morning flight to Lima, intl flight back to US at 2:15 in the afternoon.

Couple of questions regarding this itinerary:
      1. Does it make sense to spend 3 nights in PEM, or should I make it 2 nights and spend 1 extra day in the Cusco region?
      2. With my current itinerary - I have 3 nights for Cusco - is that too much? Should I instead head back to Lima on July 6th Saturday and spend the day and night in Lima?
      3. Is one night enough in Olly? I can also do 1 night in cusco, 2 nights in Olly, and then 1 night again in Cusco on the way back on Sat night?

      Would love some feedback!!
By the way, we were thinking Refugio Amazonas for the rainforest stay - anyone have any feedback on that?

      Thanks!!!

    • 17" Laptop Good for Perpetual Traveller?

      Peru May 13, 2013 at 11:38 AM

      Hi,

I've been travelling for just over a year now with my 15" Macbook, and it's been wonderful. I spend a lot of time on my computer because I work from it wherever I go, and it's very important to me.

My travel style is as minimalistic as possible (except when it comes to technology), normally Ill go around with a carryon luggage and a big backpacker bag, with several smaller bags in the backpacker bag (eg. laptop bag, backpack), and I travel pretty much on a whim (eg. I never know where I'm going more than 1-2 weeks in advance of going there). Generally I do pretty much calm stuff like beaches and temples and take it easy, and I try to stay out of big cities, but I may be doing some stuff in the Amazon soon (no cliff jumping or windsurfing or anything like that). Overall I would say it's possible that I'll go anywhere, except for warzones and other similarly dangerous places.

I like speed on my laptops and have been feeling like getting a bigger screen to really feel more at home and luxurious on the go, with a faster processor as I multitask quite a lot. I've been a computer guy for while so I am sold on the technical aspects of it, though I've heard of lots of perpetual travellers ditching their bigger laptops for 11" and 13" and similar, but I couldn't work on that small a computer regularly. My question is that based on this style of travel, does anybody have experiences travelling with a 17" Laptop, and would it be better to use a 15"?

What to do? Where to go?

      Peru May 4, 2013 at 2:26 PM

      Hello everyone!
We are experienced travelers but this will be our first time to South America.
We just booked a flight to Lima from December 22, 2013 to January 4, 2014 - All 14 days.
We are in our 40's, we are NOT backpackers, we like the AC and hot shower, we don't like mass (organized) tourism and prefer to go everywhere on our own. If we rent a car while traveling we usually don't make hotel reservations and drive until we find a town that captures our heart. We like good surprises and unpredictability. We rather fly than take a train and we rather take a train than take a bus (oh those bus drivers in Vietnam - they really are......different). We rather eat at the market with locals than at the hotel. We don't mind if our food is wrapped in the newspaper but we don't like cockroaches in our hotel room. We enjoyed rural Laos as much as we enjoyed Paris.
      You got the picture ;-)

      My questions are:
      1. What should we see in Peru other than Lima, Cusco and Machu Picchu? We like seafood, cute little friendly towns/beach towns, authentic villages etc.
      2. How much time should we spend in Lima if we are not that much interested in museums but would love spending our time sampling Peruvian cousine (seafood only! NO meat!), visiting local markets and walking around admiring the city. 2 nights on arrival and 2 nights before departure? Is that enough? Would that leave us enough time to see other places?
      3. Altitude sickness. If we are not planning to chew on coca leaves ;-) are there any good remedies available locally? Oxygen in a can? - as you can see I know nothing about it, but I would hate feeling miserable in one of the most beautiful place on earth.
      4. Peru during X-mass and New Years Eave? Is it more challenging? If we won't make our bookings now, is it going to be fully booked in December?
      5. Generally... What to do? Where to go?
We would love to hear your stories!!!!!!

I do read guide books and do diligent research on line, but the best and most interesting advices are always from those who just came back :-)

      Thank You!!!!!

      Nuta

Advise for couple travelling for 6 (or 9) days in Peru

      Peru May 7, 2013 at 2:15 PM

Hi, my girlfriend and I are taking a trip to Peru this month.

We're planning on arriving to Cuzco May the 28th early in the morning and leaving at July the 3rd, at 15h40.

That's our main plan, but if absolutely necessary in order to be abble to se what we want, we may be abble to get there at May the 25th, at 11 AM.

So, in the most probable scenerario we'll have 6 full days to spend there. In the other scenerario we'll have 9 days.

My doubt is about our itinerary. There are things I absolutely would like to see, but they are so far apart. Machu Picchu, are the number one, of course. But I'd love to get to know Titicaca and the Nazca Lines.

Is that even possible in our timeframe?

What would you guys recommend us as a rough itinerary for those days?

      Thanks a lot guys!

Boleto turistico - can you purchase outside of Cuzco?

      Cuzco Mar 17, 2013 at 1:58 PM

      Hello!

Does anyone know whether the Cuzco tourist pass can be purchased anywhere besides Cuzco? We'll be arriving in Cuzco on Good Friday, which I understand is a national holiday, and I'm concerned we won't be able to purchase one that day.

Ideally I'd like to purchase it in advance, perhaps upon arrival in Lima, but from some preliminary research it appears the only places to buy the pass are the historic sites themselves.

      Thanks in advance!

    • Cusco portion of the trip - second iteration

      Cuzco Feb 14, 2012 at 10:45 AM

Here is what our plan looks like so far. Can you, please, tell me if something could be done better? (4 people) Day 1 (Apr 5) fly into Cusco around noon. Walk around the city (no tours) Day 2 Horseback riding tour to ruins around Cusco. Prices online vary widely - from35pp to107. Perhaps it would be possible to find a cheap tour once in Cusco? Back to Cusco around 2pm. Eat, then take a minibus or taxi to Pisac. Night in Pisac. Day 3. Morning - Pisac market, ruins, then go to see Sacred Valley, end up in Olla, have dinner and take the last train to Agua Caliente, arriving to AC at 22:50. Night in AC. The actual route is not clear yet? Any recommendations? Day 4. Take the first bus up to MP, first go up to Hyana Picchu (sp?) for sunrise, then walk around the ruins. If guides are available there, take one, Lonely Planet says they charge20. Finish about 12:30, take the bus back to AC and take the train to Olla at 13:30. Arrive to Olla at 3pm, walk around spend the end of a day there. There is another option: take 16:30 train from AC to Cusco for the same money. Not sure what is better. I am concerned that we finish with MP early and will have nothing to do till train. Day 5. Full day trekking in Moray and around. Don't really want to pay for a guide but I am concerned that the is no well-defined route and I will not know where exactly to go. Am I right? Should I pay for the guide? Evening in Cusco. Day 6 (Apr 10). Take bus to Puno. Considering that there are 4 of us and that a tourist bus costs60pp, I would rather rent a car but so far could not find a company where I could return the car in Puno. Day 7. Evening in Puno. In the morning - tour islands, stay overnight on one in local house. What islands are the best to visit? Can I buy the tour on the spot? Is there a way to do it without tours - some regular "bus" boats, perhaps? Day 8. Return to Puno, take bus to Arequipa. Night in Arequipa Day 9. Day in Arequipa. Evening bus or plane to Lima Day 10 (Apr 14). Day in Lima. Leave home in the very late evening.

Myself and partner want to visit Machu Pichu in May. We are both in our 60's I have lately been a victim of altitude sickness when skiing in France so do not think trekking would be a good thing.... preference transport directly to the site probably from Cuzco.... this sort of rules out organised tour from the UK whereby a lot of time is spent at altitude. MORAY - THE SALT MINES – MARAS – CHINCHERO?

      Cuzco Jan 6, 2012 at 1:43 PM

I've been emailing a local Cusco tour guide/company, and said that I may have an extra day for our itinerary in Cusco, Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu, and asked what he would suggest for our extra day? He stated we could do: MORAY - THE SALT MINES – MARAS – CHINCHERO. Can someone tell me about Moray, the salt mines, Maras, and Chinchero? Would this be a great way to spend our extra day, yes/no? Why/why not? Also, to begin such tour, we would start from our hotel either in Ollantaytambo, or Urubamba. But, we need to be at the Cusco Airport in time to catach a 15:30 PM LAN Airlines flight to Lima. Would it be possible to do this tour in a day, and be at the airport in time? Thank you

CUSCO-LIMA LAN AIRLINES: Any problems with cancellations - overbooking?

      Cuzco Dec 29, 2011 at 9:36 AM

Have booked a LAN flight from CUZ-LIM, departs at 15:30 pm, arrives LIM at 16:50 PM. Travel date is mid-May. I have read where sometimes the weather may cancel flights, or maybe passengers may have to be bumped due to overbooking. I am a concerned about this because I am continuing on with a late evening, same day, connecting flight in LIM. It's a United flight to IAH, not even a partner with LAN. My United flight is not till 23:45 PM, so I'd have plenty of time to connect to the UA flight, but I am just concerned about getting to LIM. Should I be concerned? Do I have to arrive early at CUZ to check in? How early? Thanks for any information.

How to enjoy Lima & Cuzco within a week?

      Cuzco Aug 27, 2010 at 9:11 AM

It would be my first time in South America and I'm planning a three week excursion around South America with one week in Peru to visit Manchu Pichu. Assuming my flight will arrive in Lima, how should I plan my trip to get the max out of the week? Things I'm wondering: 1. How do I get to Cuzco from Lima and how long does it? By plane or bus? If by bus, anything along the way I should check it out? 2. How many days I should be in Cuzco if I want to visit Manchu Pichu? What are different ways I can do this to get to most out of this trip. 3. With accommodation options, what would be recommended if I'm working on a budget trip. 4. What are the costs involved with these types of excursions and accommodation on average? Thank you very much for helping out. This would help alot to see if my trip is feasible. Cafetran Cheers, cafetran

Hi, I'm currently in Cusco and looking to get direct to La Paz. I know you can fly but this is a bit too expensive so I was going to take a bus. You can get direct buses - I think they take about 12 hours but they go overnight (leave at 10pm) and all the books advise against overnight buses. Also, some of the guidebooks report of robberies on this route. I was wondering if anyone has done this route before or has any knowledge of how safe/dangerous a direct Cusco->La Paz bus is? Any other ideas of how to get there? Cheers.

Hi there I arrive in Cuzco on June 5th and leave on June 9th for Lima. Can anyone help me with the following questions: 1. What accommodation would you recommend that would be appropriate for a single female traveler either in Cuzco or Sacred Valley? My budget is25 per night and I would prefer eco-lodging, if possible. 2. Would I be doing Machu Picchu any justice if I spend just 1 full day there? I plan to take the earliest train out and one of the latest trains back (either to Cuzco or Sacred Valley). 3. Is it fairly safe for a single female traveler to catch a cab by herself around the Cuzco / Sacred Valley / Pisac areas? Or would a bus be better? Thanks so much!

I am thinking about spending 2-3 days in Aguas Calientes. I want to give myself enough time for Machu Picchu. If I have more time than I need, are there tours departing from Aguas Calientes to see areas/sites beyond there? Places that are worth seeing but because of time and distance would be difficult to get to from Cuzco. Because of age and health we could not do the hiking, so it would have to be some form of tour. Any suggestions, or is Aguas Calientes the end of the road and we would be better off heading back toward Cuzco after visiting Machu Picchu? Many Thanks!

    • Cuzco, communication tower nearby?

      Cuzco Oct 4, 2009 at 3:46 AM

50 years ago my father worked in the Cuzco area on a contract that lasted almost 3 years. He was there working on the construction of a huge communication mast (tall tower) that he described as being on top of a mountain. Me and the wife will be visiting Cuszco in January 2010 and we are wondering if anybody knows if there is a mast sitting on top of a mountain nearby? It would be nice to see this if it’s still there. If there is more than one mast then that would complicate things a bit but 45-50 years ago was when he was there and when it would have been erected. Can anybody help with this unusual request? whitewater rafting in June/July

      Cuzco Jun 19, 2009 at 12:26 AM

Hello, Can anyone tell me if it is advisable to do whitewater rafting in Urubamba during the months of June/July ? I understand that it is the dry season so I'm not sure if there's enough rapids for a whitewater rafting trip... Thanks... Maria

Next Jan (2010) me and a friend are travelling round the world on a RTW ticket and one of our stops included in the price of the ticket we are looking at is Lima. We are wanting to do the Machu Picchu trek but obviously we need to travel to Cusco for this. Whilst we are in the region (next stop is home!) we also wanted to visit the Galapogos Islands but at the moment I am unsure as to whether we need to return to Lima to fly home. My question is, is this workable? I have looked at flight prices and it seems to be working out rather expensive and although I would dearly love to visit the Galapogos I am wondering whether it would be better to miss this out. If anyone who has done a similar route or has any ideas please do let me know, at the moment I am at a loss as to how we can achieve this! Thanks for any help you can give me!

    • Flights from Lima-Cuzco-Lima

      Cuzco Feb 20, 2009 at 4:18 PM

I had a question regarding the reliability/schedule of the flights between Lima and Cuzco. Lim-Cuz is not that big a problem but I have a connecting flight from Lima to SFO (USA) at 12:15pm. Could I trust Star Peru or Taca to get me to Lima airport in time to make my flight from Lima-SFO? Thanks in advance, Asheesh

Can you purchase a tourist pass in Yukay rather than Cusco? I will be in Yukay before arriving in Cusco and would like to visit some sites .

      Altitude Sickness concern

      Cuzco Feb 2, 2009 at 9:34 PM

Hi, I've had altitude sickness before when I was climbing up Mt Kilimanjaro - I got really sick at about 12500ft high, too sick I had to descend the trail. Because of this I am really concerned about Cuzco, and also, I am taking my daughter with me who hasn't been in this kind of altitude (highest we go to when skiing is about 7000ft - which she doesn't have a problem with). So now I am thinking we can stay in Ollantaytambo for a couple of nights before exploring Cuzco. We can go straight from Cuzco airport to Ollantaytambo, to acclimatize better (though still pretty high but at least lower than Cuzco). If we do this, are there places to buy MP tickets in Ollanntaytambo ? or I can only get it from Cuzco ? so we have to go to Cuzco to buy tickets ? I am thinking we can go to MP while staying in Ollantaytambo (possible stay a night in AC), then stay in Cuzco after we are done with MP & Sacred Valley. Does this itinerary make sense ? We also have about 2 weeks to spend in Peru - I would love to see the Lake Titicaca islands - but then again, the altitude concerns me. So if I cannot go to Lake Titica, what other place would you recommend for us to visit ? Arequipa maybe ? Oh one more question, if ever we develop a bad case of altitude sickness, would there be places around for some immediate treatment (if coca tea and/or diamox doesn't help) ? I don't know, maybe oxygen tank ? I know it sounds ridiculous but having been through altitude sickness myself, I am scared for my daughter to go through the same thing. I know the sickness gets better immediately if we descend - but if we are in Ollantaytambo/Cuzco area, where can we quickly descend to ? Thanks everyone !

While in Peru our tour group will be staying at 3 different Casa Andina hotels. Has anyone stayed in any of these and can you offer any reviews.
