    • Jacket for Peru Andes in May

      Peru Feb 18, 2015 at 5:15 PM

Hello everyone! Glad to have found this forum!

I'm going to Peru in April and will under 3 months be traveling from Lima down to Arequipa and Cusco and then Into the jungle in north. I guess I won't have much use of a wind jacket on the coast or jungle but in the mountains on the other hand?

I have checked out these two wind jackets to wear as a top-layer:

      1) catalog.bergans.com/clothing...

      2) catalog.bergans.com/clothing...

I have tried them both out for a good price at two different stores but can't decide which is the right one. The first one is really thin and light (like a running jacket almost) but is apparently windproof. This one would be good for it's small packed size and weight. But I'm not sure if it will be enough. The second one is a bit thicker and more robust and also has more functions like ventilation-zips under the arms.

My dilemma is this: I don't want to bring a jacket that feels to overkill and just takes up place in my backpack but I still don't want to end up with a jacket that is really lightweight and compact but can't do the job. Which one do you think is the right choice?

      Thanks a lot! smiley

    • worth visiting in march 2015?

Machu Picchu Feb 17, 2015 at 5:12 PM

      Hi all,
Planning on visiting cusco and doing the day trip to MP next month, however I have noted that the weather is likely to be wet. Has anyone had experience of MP in this weather? I am anxious of spending the money to go to see the amazing MP but being disappointed by poor visibility and being unable to take good photographs for the memory.
      Thank you in advance

      Hello everyone!

I'm going to Peru in April and am wondering if it is necessary to bring a smaller backpack to have on treks or if it works fine with the main backpack (it will be 60 l) ?

      Anyone with experience? :)

      Tickets to enter mp

Machu Picchu Feb 16, 2015 at 6:23 AM

Investigating possible trip to mp in July and read it's advisable to buy your tickets to get into mp a day or so prior--we would be in Cuzco and I saw a reference to the ticket office. I was then looking at pix of mp in general and saw a reference that you must have a guide inside the grounds. So, question, is there a chance the tickets to mp could sell out? Do I need a guide to go in with us? We aren't wanting to do a trek, just enter mp. Thanks!

      shoes to pack/wear

Machu Picchu Feb 25, 2015 at 8:54 AM

I am travelling round Peru inc walking the last part of the trek up to Machu Picchu so wondering what footwear is best. I am then moving to a small boat for a trip round the Galapagos and again wondering about footwear. I will be using a rucksack. Would full walking boots be best or lighter walking shoes or walking sandals.
re boat would it be wise to take canvas shoes which can get wet then walk round the various islands.

    • Waterproof shoes or not for hiking and jungling in Peru?

      Peru Yesterday

      Hello everybody!

I have this question: Should one go for a waterproof shoe for trekking in Peru (both in the mountains and the jungle) or is it a better idea to go for shoes that are not waterproof but breathable shoes and thus dry out more quickly? Anyone with experience? I hear some people saying that waterproof isn't worth it but still, don't wanna get wet every time the showers of rain come!

      Thankful for answers :)!

Hotel Recommendation Please: Lima, Peru: Miraflores District

      Lima Jul 3, 2014 at 1:17 PM

Does anyone have a hotel recommendation based on personal experience in the past year? I am looking for something mid-priced in the Miraflores district. Nothing fancy; simple is fine; clean, secure, and relatively quiet. We will be 3 adults and need 1 or 2 rooms depending on what's available. We will be staying at the beginning of August.

      Thanks for the recommenations.

      Lima Nov 1, 2013 at 5:33 PM

I am wondering, although I have heard how safe it is in Miraflores, if it truly is advisable to not use my DSLR camera openly while walking around this district. I really would like to be able to take decent pictures of the views, etc. I do have a little pocket point and shoot that takes ok pictures...is this what I should use instead for my own safety and possibility of being robbed?

      When and where

Alto Peru Oct 22, 2013 at 9:41 AM

We have a month to spend in Peru. Either April or May. We are independent travelers and prefer to go by our selves rather than tours. Although a mixture might be the answer. We like driving a rental car. I am just starting to plan this vacation and really don't know quite how to spend our month. I guess my questions are: Which month to travel, where to travel, can we use a car, which tours are necessary vs what can we do on our own???

Advice on travel between Lima and Iquitos

      Lima Jan 15, 2013 at 2:04 PM

      Hi

I’m travelling to Peru, arriving in Lima at 05.30 on a Wednesday morning.

Can anyone tell me what is the likelihood of me being able to purchase a plane ticket to Iquitos upon my arrival to Lima Airport?

Also, I’m not sure of the exact date that I’ll be leaving Iquitos. How much more expensive would it be for me to purchase 2 separate one-way tickets as opposed to a single return ticket?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Kay and I want to thank everyone for responding to our original questions. Your advice, insight and the information provided is very much appreciated. Our trip is a tour that includes hotels, transportation between cities and historic sites like Machu Picchu. However, there is free time to do some exploring on our own. Again, your suggestions are appreciated for this trip and hopefully for future trips to Peru.

      First Trip to Peru

      Lima Aug 9, 2012 at 9:37 PM

In September 2012 we will take our first trip, a tour, to Peru. We will spend four nights in Lima (Hotel Antigua Miraflores), two nights in Urubamba (San Agustin Urubamba Hotel), two nights in Cuzco (San Agustin International), and two nights in Puno (Hotel Royal Inn Puno). We would appreciate any information on reasonably priced and good restaurants in the area of these hotels. Also, what mode of transportation is recommended if there is some distance to travel? Any other information or ideas for places to see would be appreciated. We want to thank everyone responding to our questions.

A "window" of time in Lima

      Lima Jul 19, 2012 at 9:31 PM

Hello! A friend and I will be arriving into Lima from Cuzco around 3pm. Niether of our flights leave for the U.S. until 11:45pm that same day. So, I am wondering if we can secure our luggage somewhere at the airport (lockers?) and then head into town for a few hours via taxi or bus? Is there anything reasonably close that we could go do/explore in our tiny little window of time?
