    • Has anyone taken the 3:30am Cruz del Sur bus out of Lima?

      Peru Jul 1, 2015 at 8:27 AM

Hello! I am planning a trip to Peru for this September and am trying to work out the last details of our trip! We are flying into Lima at 5:30pm and are planning to take the bus to Nazca at 3:30am with Cruz del Sur (we have the VIP tickets.) I would have preferred to take the later bus, but this was the only way that we could really fit Nazca into our trip and my husband was really set on seeing the lines. Has anyone taken the 3:30am bus before? Is the bus terminal safe at this time of the morning? We are debating either getting a hotel in Miraflores so we have a little time to relax, or just pulling an all nighter and trying to stay up late and then catch the bus. Both of us seem to be able to sleep anywhere, so I am not worried about missing out on sleep since we can just catch some sleep on the bus. We want to make sure that we stay safe if we stay out this late and also do not have a problem finding a taxi in the early morning hours. Does anyone have a recommendation for what we could do? If we went somewhere like Barranco to experience the nightlife, do you think we would have an easy enough time finding a taxi to take us to the bus station at this time, or do you think it would be a better idea to book a hotel and have them arrange our taxi to the bus terminal? I was thinking that trying to go to Barranco or Miraflores at night might be safer and give us more options of things to do than trying to stay near the city center, regardless or whether or not we end up getting a hotel. Also, do you think arriving 1 hour ahead for the bus is the best plan, or would anyone recommend getting there earlier or later? If anyone has been in this situation before and have any advice, please let me know! We'd love to get some input!

    • How bad are the Mosquitoes in Iquitos??

      Iquitos Jun 26, 2015 at 12:04 PM

Wondering if I should spend the money for a Yellow Fever shot and the Malaria meds. We will be there for two days and do a canopy walk during our stay. I'm planning to wear light weight long sleeves and long pants and bring insect repellent. Should I spend the money on the shot and meds? Any thoughts? We will be there during their winter in July.

    • Budget of a cheap 3.5-4 month trip to Ecuador and Peru

      Peru Jun 15, 2015 at 1:12 PM

Hello. I am in Canada and I am planning to visit Peru and Ecuador with a college friend during the next summer. I was thinking about arriving in Quito and then going south to Lima, mainly through the coast but possibly with some detours into the mountains, if I can. I would then like to go to Arequipa, in the central south. This should be 2.5-3 months in total. After that I would like to go to Macchu Picchu and hike the Inca Trail. After that I would spend my last weeks around the mountains. When I go, I want to spend my time at the beaches up north. Since it will be fall over then, I won't be able to do that once I get further south. I also want to go out at night on the weekends and during the week when possible. Visiting ruins is something I really want to do, but I would also like to see some museums. I am originally from Peru and I have friends and family over there. I can stay at somone's house in Quito, Trujillo, Lima, Cuzco and Arequipa without having to pay. I expect around 40% of the accomodation to be free. I also would get some free meals, and I think a realistic estimate would be 20% of meals will be free.

I don't mind hitchhiking or eating at marketplaces sometimes. I also don't mind couchsurfing or other things like that.

What could be a budget estimate? And even more important, how can I make the estimate more accurate? I have trouble estimating what a trip could cost when I am not sure of where I may go between the cities I mentioned above. However it would be nice to get a solid budget to know what to expect.

      Thank you!

    • Salaverry Disembarkation

      Trujillo May 13, 2014 at 5:53 AM

Would anyone familiar with the port of Salaverry and the disembarkation process know about times to exit ships. I am arriving on Zaandam at 5am on Oct 21. Assuming we do dock at 5am would it be reasonable to be able to catch a flight from the airport at 8am. I think if I can get off the ship no later than 6:30 I should be able to do it. Any ideas or advice please.

      Inexpensive lodging recommendations in Trujillo

      Trujillo Apr 28, 2011 at 5:40 PM

Hello — I am looking for some lodging recommendations for Trujillo, late August.

I'm not a fan of hostels, but hoping to find relatively inexpensive accommodations that provide privacy and a good, central location. Character and charm are big bonuses!

On a related note, I'm considering the same search for a night or two in Huanchaco — any beachside recommendations?

    • Art/Craft Supply store in Trujillo, Peru

      Trujillo Jan 17, 2011 at 9:39 AM

I'm wondering if anyone knows of any crafts/art supply stores in Trujillo, Peru. I'm thinking of a Michael's or JoAnn's but I'm not sure if those even exist in Peru. Maybe just a fabric store? Any help would be much appreciated! I already looked at Plaza Vea and didn't find what I wanted.
      Thanks!

      Wheelchair accessible travel?

      Trujillo Sep 16, 2007 at 11:41 AM

Greetings! My wife and I will be visiting Peru in early October. The complicating issue is my confinement to a wheelchair since having two major sugeries last year. I will be taking a small folding tavel wheelchair. Will it be possible to hire taxis to drive us btween cities? Are there any wheelchair accessible hotels and restaurants? We have engaged a tour company to show us Machu Picchu and Cuzco, then heat up the Noth coast to Chiclayo, Trujillo, and Sechin. We'd also like to see Chavin de Huantar, but can only afford a couple of days of expensive tour travel and have used those up on MP and Cuzco. Any advice would be appreciated!

      Thank you!

      Tren de la Sierra

      Trujillo Sep 29, 2005 at 12:57 PM

Has anyone ridden this train from Lima to Huancayo? It is called the world's highest railway line and the article stated that there is bottled oxygen available on board for low landers like myself so that we won't suffer altitude sickness. The highest point is at 4,829 meters above sea level. I plan to visit an internet sweetheart in Trujillo in December and am tempted to take this ride. The ride sounds scarier than the most advanced roller coaster.
