hotel near nightlife and ogden theatre

by jrgiddyup Online Now Mar 28, 2013 at 3:48 PM

me and a friend are going to denver to see two shows at the ogden theatre in may. we're looking for a hotel that is reasonably close to the ogden theater, BUT more importantly walking distance to bars in the downtown area (which seems to be an ok area to go out at night?). we're on a budget, so price is definitely a consideration. we will probably go out after the concerts at the ogden and on a third night just go out to party in general. is there good nightlife around the ogden? if not, where would be a good place to stay within walking distance of good nightlife that is an easy/cheap cab ride to the ogden? thanks in advance for your help.

The Ogden is in kind of a weird area. It's close to Capitol Hill, which is sort of a hipster area, but it's on the edge of a less desirable area and that part of Colfax right there is a little skeezy at night. I would still stay Downtown and at least walk to the shows, but maybe taxi back if there aren't a lot of people around. If it's a popular show, then there will be people around after as you mostly have to park on the street.

Downtown is really the best area to stay in. There are a few bars and clubs there, but most are in LoDo, which is sort of on the northwest end of Downtown (look for Blake Street). There are also some good places in Capitol Hill, but south of Colfax a few blocks. The only issue with staying Downtown is parking. You'll likely have to pay for it because, in Downtown Denver, you cannot leave your car on the street overnight, even though the meters are not enforced.

    Hope that helps.

Sorry, I should address the budget concerns. Check Hotwire/Priceline, because you can usually get a room Downtown for under $100, provided there's not something going on (Great American Beer Fest, marathon, etc.). A lot of the hotels are on the southeast side of Downtown, along 16th Street but, even if you don't get near there, you can take the free 16th Street Mall shuttle to get around. The last one hits the east end of the mall at around 1:15.
