Sailing to Varanasi

I've seen on the web that tour operators organize sailing trips down the Ganges from Allahabad to Varanasi, camping along the way. Does anyone know if it's possible to do this without a tour operator and how much it might cost? I will be travelling on my own in March. Thanks, Sibylla
