Dar es Salaam is a typical African city with a hectic downtown and quiet outskirts. You might find the northern part like Msasani interesting and cosy. Just join the streetlife, eat at African restaurants and drink the Serengeti beer. The city is in general more safe than other big cities. However you should be careful when walking at the harbour and beach areas at night. Ubungo Bus Terminal serves Mombasa. The bus station is located in the crossroad of Morogoro road and Sam Nujoma road, 15 minutes drive from the downtown. Dar es Salaam University is not far away. I don't know about the bus schedule.
