How Do I Get to Ceske Budejovice from the UK?

by TheSingingPostman Online Now Dec 4, 2008 at 8:25 AM

I understand that Ceske Budejovice airport is very obscure and difficult to fly to from western Europe. What's the best way to get to the city from the UK? (My nearest airport is East Midlands. You can fly to Praha from there....) And what mistakes should I avoid making? Thanks.

flying into prague and taking either a bus or train from there looks like the only option you may have or look at surrounding countries to see if there are better conections ( ie are these airports nearer than the 160kms prague is away hope you get there julie

Flying to prague and catching bus from there is perhaps the best option. From prague airport, you can get to the Florenc bus station by public transportation. It is about 2-3 hours by bus to Ceske budejovice.

Looks like it's got to be a bus job, then. Pardon my ignorance, but how widely understood is English in CZ in hotels/bus offices/rail stations etc.? That's to say, will they kick me off the bus if I can't make myself understood?

We drove so I didn't really research the two options, bus or train, but there appears to be multiple train and bus options. Look here and remember to use Praha instead of Prague and also remember to check which Prague station they leave from as there are many stations. You can select English on the bottom right side of the screen. jizdnirady.idnes.cz/vlakyaut... I don't know a word of Czech and we managed just fine in both Prague and Ceske Budejovice. You can take an airport bus from Prague's airport to Prague central to get to the metro and then the train station or do the easy thing and take a cab, I remember reading somewhere that you needed to be careful of which cabs you get in though. I have the info on the airport bus on my Prague page. Prague Transportation Tips by Dabs

Many thanks to all for your input. Much appreciated. By the way, I understand that there are plenty of skinheads in the Czech Republic these days. If I go to see a hardcore punk band play, will I get kicked repeatedly for not being a skinhead myself? Or are CZ skinheads just great big cuddly teddybears?

No - not been kicked recently, in Blackpool or anywhere else, thank heaven. Someone threatened to stab me on my way home from a punk gig in my home town recently (just a 5-minute walk), but fortunately he didn't follow the threat through. I suspect that Pilsen may be teeming with skinheads, though, so won't go thereeven though they do have a couple of good punk bands. Mind you, if I wore a Union Jack T-shirt, they might not kick me quite so hard, out of respect for the fact that skinheads were invented in the UK........
