I will be travelling from the Lake Titicaca area around Puno, to Cuzco then Machu Picchu next January. Can anyone offer advice about travel? UNfortunately, we will only have a maximum of a week all told, to include Cuzco and Machu Picchu and back to Cuzco. If this info can extend to advice on birds to be seen, or better still a record of what YOU have seen, then all the better. Cheers in advance Gary
We have traveled from Arequipa to Puno, Lake Titicaca then to Cuzco last June, 2003 which was half of our trip. Here's our itinerary: June 25 - arrived in Puno (through Juliaca airport from Arequipa) at 1:10pm. Checked in at El Balcon. June 26 - took a boat ride to Uros Island for half a day (morning). Left Puno at 3pm by bus (Ormeno Royal Class Bus, 7 hrs) arrived at Cuzco at 10pm. There was no flight operations from Juliaca to Cuzco. Check if they do now, then it will save you time (LanPeru). June 27 - Visited museums and other attractions. June 28 - Took the earliest train to Aguas Calientes in the morning. Check in Hotel Pueblo. (there are other hotels). Took a tour bus to Machu Picchu by 9am or 10am. Spent 4-5 hours inside MP. Back to Aguas Calientes to eat dinner... a lot of inexpensive restaurants along the railroad track and good food. Back to our hotel to sleep. June 29 - You can either go back to MP in the morning and leave noon by train to Ollantaytambo, or you can go back straight to Cuzco. Ask your hotel to hire a taxi cab to drive you around Sacsayhuaman ruins and the Sacred Valley of the Incas, or go shopping.. good crafts and inexpensive, too.
