Hiking - Do we have to use a company or can we hike on our own

by jennilaz Online Now Jul 19, 2012 at 10:10 AM

My husband and I are planning a hiking trip to Peru mid-October for amonth. We are used to hiking on our own (no guides or tours). We also prefer "day-hikes". Any advice or suggestions. We thought of staying in Cusco for most of the time, and using it as a base for hikes. Is this a good location? I would appreciate all suggestions.

Hi!! I love hikking too and Cusco is a good place to use as a base if your planning on visiting Machu Picchu too but most hikes take more than a day and would have to be done with guides... The traditional Inca Trek takes 4 days and needs to be done with a guide Other options that you dont necesarily have to do with a guide but it is highly recommended are: Salkantay (5 days), Ausangate (varies), Choquequira (One of my favourites - varies) and lares (4 days). There is another hike that few people now about Huchuy Qosqo - you can actually start walking from the Plaza the Armas of Cusco, upto Saqsayhuaman and continue walking all the Way to Huchuy Qosqo, which is located overlooking the urubamba river in the sacred valley, close to the village of Calca. This trek is sometimes offered as a 2 day trek but can be done in a day (it took me about 1o hours walking and 2 hours returning by bus from calca to cusco. ALSO!! If youre not planning on going to Machu Picchu you could got to Huaraz instead of Cusco, which is by far the HIKING CAPITAL OF PERU. They have literaly dozens of available treks overthere. Huaraz is located close to some of the highest snow-covered mountains in Peru so it has lots glacial lakes and beautiful landscapes. Its the starting point for the Huayhuash Trek for example, which is categorized as one of the best treks in the world. Other great options are the Santa Cruz Trek or the los Cedros trek.... you have many options =) Maybe check out this page... it has many of the treks with pictures and descriptions... peruviansoul.com/28/destinat...
