Credit and Debit cards in Cusco

by Canuck5 Online Now Mar 21, 2010 at 3:29 PM

Is one credit card (ie. Mastercard vs. Visa) better to use over the other in Cusco ? I'm hearing that a credit card without a PIN cannot be used in the area... is this so ? Can Debit cards be used in the city ? Are bank machines commonplace there ? For exchanging money, would I be better to do so at one of the local banks (www.aboutcusco.com says there are only five), or at a money exchange office (the same website says there are seven). Thanks for any advice.

I didn't use a credit card but a European debit card (with Maestro symbol), to take out money from ATMs. In Cusco I used one near the Plaza, seemed to me there were lots around there. ATMs are commonplace in Peru, at least in cities - there are even several in the arrival hall at Lima airport. It also seemed to me that they accepted a great many cards but of course they require a PIN. For payments, apart from cash I used a non-PIN credit card (American Express) in Lima, don't see why Cusco would be any different.

Check with your bank to get a new card or cards. The major Canadian banks seem to be issuing both credit and debit cards with chip & PIN now (in fact my wife had a debit card with PIN from Scotiabank show up in the mail today). When we were in Peru (about 4-1/2 years ago now), there were ATMs pretty well everywhere. As for non-PIN cards not working - I think that is an exaggeration. We just got back from France and both my PIN and my wife's non-PIN cards worked in ATMS.

Thanks, Grumpy and Gaminari. Anyone have any experience or advice about using the banks versus the money exchange outlets ?

I very rarely deal with money exchange any more. The ATMs provide me with all of the local currency I need.

I agree with the above. Go for the ATM's. There's at least a few around Plaza de Armas. Have fun!
