Or via Mexico. There are cheap deals to Cuba from both Mexico City and Cancun.

Americans go to Cuba like 70K last year, from all over except the USA. DOnt use anything related to the USA like credit cards, use cash ,and all will be ok. They wont stamp your passport upon entry. even boaters go to Hemingway marina from the USA ! you got some countries that will let you fly to, just come back thru them too ::) Cheers

As others have said, you need to fly through Canada or Mexico. You do this by booking two completely separate flights. For example if you decide to go through Canada, you would book a return flight from your home to the nearest major Canadian city. Then book a second flight from that city to Cuba. When you arrive in Cuba they will either stamp a piece of paper or nothing at all so there is no record in your passport. The Cubans are very welcoming to American tourists. It's the American government that discourages travel there. Make sure you have plenty of cash with you. Your US credit cards and bank cards will not work there. Do not mention Cuba when passing through US customs and passport control. As far as they're concerned you're going to Canada (or Mexico) for your vacation.

Not sure if the Canadian option is safe anymore. Canada has to supply origin / destination information as well and name and passport number for all passengers for any flight entering US airspace. It's hard to get to Cuba from Canada without overflying the USA.

Legally, you either need to travel as part of an organized group that has a license, or you need to qualify and be granted a license. The general guidelines are at treasury.gov/resource-center... If you work around the legal chanels and get caught, expect consquences. The easiest is to find a study or artistic tour that looks interesting, some of the programs have significent free time in them. Cuba does not appear to be a cheap destination for American visitors.
