Just got back from friends house where i looked at his Croatia
photos.
The ones that impressed and are on my schedule were Mljet
and Plitvice lakes and to say i,m dumstruck with pure beauty
is spot on!!!!
But also the wild rugged Velebit !!!!
Where/what town Velebit ---also what town for Plitvice
Your question is where you need to stay whenever you want to visit these beautiful sights?

We stayed in Hotel Jezero which was a 'blast from the past'... still having something of the earlier Socialist regime about it...very close to The Lakes..in the Plitvice Lakes National Park

Ok it appears there are sleep options and looking at map its just the Zadar
to Zargreb hwy ???
The town Plitvika Jezera looks smack in middle so a bus from Zadar to
Plitvika Jezara would be easy to catch ?????

We were on a tour either 2007 or 2005 and stayed at Hotel Jezero, approx 15 minute drive from Plitvic Lakes. I have a page on Plitvic Lakes, so beautiful, we were there late September, ice on parts early morning.
Most tour buses go to Hotel Jezero as there was a lack of hotels when we visited. I have read there is B&B etc close to Plitvic.
As for the other lake we have not visited.

Hi,
You are not going to do Mljet and Plitvice in one trip? That would be a bit difficult logistically - it's not a big country, but definitely long.
Besides, every place has its own attractions. On your way from north to south you will surely have to stay and see Split or Trogir, not to speak about Dubrovnik

Have a month ---arrive Split 3 then about 8/9 days to D,nik via Hvar & Korcula.
D,nik 3 then two or three in Kotor/Budva---swing up to Sarajavo 2 then back to
D,nik with a stop at Mostar and after a night in D,nik will head the coast road back
thru Split stop at Trogir/Sibenik---next to Zadar [and an island or two] then thru
Plitvice Lakes and on to Zargreb
Aint inscribed in concrete as ive plenty of time to stay or go at will
Travelling solo affords that ones decision is final

maybe the official site will help you too :-) http://www.np-plitvicka-jezera.hr/en/
there are some offers for accomodation as well.
yes, Plitvice Lakes is in the middle between Zadar and Zagreb (I mean the time for getting the place is more or less the same).
it could be good idea to stop in Plitvice if you will be on the route from Zadar to Zagreb. As I've told before (in other forum) we had a day trip from Zadar (if i remember rightly, the bus started at 10 am and duration was 2 hours around). For us 4 hours in the park was enough - we had just walked along the paths without long stops anywhere. And we got the bus returned to Zadar at 5 pm. I remember there is a table with busses in the park office and there were more busses to Zagreb than to Zadar :-). you may contact the park office to check bus timetable and maybe you come to the park from Zadar at the morning but at evening you continue with bus to Zagreb... (although I haven't idea whether they have luggage storeroom...)

Besides Plitvice Lakes, I can also suggest Krka National Park. Having been in both parks, I was very frustrated with not being able to jump into the crystal clear waters in Plitvice. However, I could swim in Krka National Park. You can find links to both destinations in my homepage.

Don't miss island of Korcula, we call it little Dubrovnik, Stone at peninsula of Pelješac, Konavli and Cavtat.
If driving along the coast, the city of Senj could be way to go to Velebit

How about Istria, many says its Tuscany alike? Take into the consideration, distances are very short in Croatia and the roads among best in Europe.

I have a plan but remember what John
Lennon said "Life is what is happening
whilst your making other plans"
Actually I'm a wanderer and although
I have "a plan" I will pick up on stuff
as I go from place to place
But from this site I get gr8 ideas
and good info
Rather than google what's Istria like

Check my pages and feel free to ask, I was grown up in Istria. There is plenty to see and the max travelling distance, side to side is 100km only. Wouldn't be surprised if you will wish to move there, lol

If you want to explore Velebit, and it is well worth it, there are three start points. No 1 is hotel at Baške Oštarije above Karlobag, No 2 is Krasno ie Krasno polje where you can stay at family guesthouses or a very cheap and very sportly and simple mountain refuge Zavižan.
Examine Youtube for pictures taken on Velebit.
