If we had a three day gap between a tour ending in Zagreb at end of August 2013 and a meeting at Opatjia on the Croatian coast, what would be a good way to spend that time? Is there another destination easily accessible to both places, or is there enough to see in Zagreb to pass the time?
You could visit Plitvic Lakes, it is a magnificent park with 16 waterfalls, takes a day to see it properly and spend a couple of days in Zagreb

Absolutely agree with above...
I wonder whether you will have a wish to go somewhere after tour ending :-) therefore a couple of days in Zagreb + day-trip to Plitvice Lakes sounds the best idea...
but if you'll have strength to continue your journey, you may go Istria area (where Opatija is) and to see Pula or Porec...

Plitvice Lakes, definitelly! The best choice to be seen in Croatia, in this route Opatija > Zagreb. A little bit out of the route, but you will find the way how to go to the lakes. Close to the lakes, you've got a lot of private appartments, and you can book the accomodation, or in the hotels at lakes. Worst to be seen in 2-3 days. Enjoy the nature.

Plitvice Jezera (lakes) is a magnificent choice. You can also visit Krka National Park. You can check details on my related pages. Just go to my homepage and you will find links to Zagreb, Plitvice lakes and more.
