      Kilmainham Gaol

      Dublin May 23, 2015 at 12:50 AM

      Dear Unknown.

My family and I are in Dublin from the 19. of juni to the 23. of june. Unfortunately much too little time.
ButI have read, that the left wing and the museum of Kilmainham Gaol can be closed during the summer, because of renovation. Does anyone know, if it will be in the periode, where we are visiting the city?
I also read, that the Riverdance Show is coming to Dublin on the date, we are leaving. I am very sad about that. But I would like to know if there are any possibilities to see some Riverdance anyhow?

      Thank you in advance

I was wondering if it's possible to drive the Gap of Dunloe by car. Following Google maps, you can travel from Beaufort to Moll's Gap, but when I read the different comments on the web, I am not sure anymore. Anyone who took this road recently?

A Brief Visit to County Louth?

County Louth May 10, 2015 at 12:26 AM

Traveling as a single female, I'm wondering if County Louth is a safe place to stay. Thus far, I see no reason why it wouldn't be.
      Q: Should I stay 1 or 2 days?
Q: Is there anything to do other than see castles (which sounds wonderful, anyway)?
Q: I'm planning on starting my trip in Dublin and heading to Louth & Galway. Can I see the sites in Louth on foot, or will I need to drive?
      Many thanks!

I am 71 years old, am NOT going to drive abroad (I am from the USA) any longer, but would love to spend a couple of days in Kinsale. I have heard it is so beautiful. Is there a bus I could take there from Shannon or Dublin? Where/how would I arrange that?

      Ireland May 7, 2015 at 12:45 PM

Visitor from US; I am in Blackrock and have been trying to purchase a SIM card for my iPhone 5s. I have been to 3 Tesco stores in the area and a Carphone warehouse. None have had a nano SIM card. I would like data plus ability to make local calls in Ireland so that I can make reservations. This would be for 3 weeks.
      Any advice?? Thank you.

      How to get around

      Sligo Jul 29, 2014 at 3:47 AM

Hi VTs. We are spending about a week in Ireland next summer and will be staying in the countryside about 40km southwest of Sligo. What is the best way for us to travel so we can see the best of Ireland in that week? Driving is OK, but I'd like to be able to do some whiskey tasting, and enjoy the pubs, so alternate ideas are welcome. We will be 4 adults, and at the end of the week, we'll be leaving from Dublin.

      Thank you!

Visiting Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery in November?

County Sligo Nov 3, 2012 at 11:41 AM

I will be in the Sligo area this month and would very much like to visit the Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery. The trouble is that all of the information I am finding says that the area is only open April through October. Is the entire area gated, fenced, or otherwise closed off in during the 'off season'? Is it possible for me to just park and walk around so long as I understand that the visitor's center is not in operation? Thank you in advance to anyone who can help :-)
      Cheers!

    • TRAVEL FROM SLIGO TO?

      Sligo Jul 9, 2010 at 7:54 PM

After spending a week horsebackriding in the Sligo area, we have 5 days to travel to other areas of Ireland. Are there specific modes of travel from Sligo that make it easy to see other areas. We will be arriving from Dublin by train to Sligo, so would like to go to the Spainish Point area, but am not sure how to get there from Sligo since we will not have a car. Or, should we head to another area. We are very flexible. Are there car rentals in Sligo that allow us to drop off the car in Dublin where we will be flying home? ANy type of information or suggestions would be appreciated? This is our first visit abroad to Ireland.

    • lodging near sligo train station

      Sligo Jun 7, 2009 at 8:57 PM

Can anyone recommend a hotel or B&B in Sligo that is not too far from the train station? (Unless the train station is in a dreadful part of town that you'd discourage staying in.) Main concerns are something accessible to my 93-year-old mom who uses a push walker and can't do a lot of stairs at one time. Did you have occasion to use either taxi or bus from the station to the hotel or B&B? Do you recall the approximate cost?

      Sligo Mar 15, 2008 at 4:10 PM

Going to Co. Sligo for three weeks this summer.I am an assistant to a writer and we will be doing research for a book while there. Where do you suggest we stay? We can stay anywhere in Co Sligo. Ideally, we would like to stay in a house in a village center where we can walk to eat, to a pub. We are open to all accommodations that offer comofort and have charm.

County Sligo Mar 29, 2007 at 9:27 AM

I am a confused Yank whose wife has McGowan roots in the Barney area, near both Cloughboley and Ballyconnell, in something called Ballinfull. I understand that Barney is served by the Cloughboley PO. What exactly is "Barney"? A hamlet? A townland? A civil Parish? And what other POs serve the peninsula that consists of an area shown as Drumcliff on some maps (not the town or village of Drumcliff, which holds the remains of William B. Yeats)? And finally, what PO delivers the mail to Dunleavy's Market and to Ellen's Pub and to the immedaite area around the Carrigans cemetery? Help!!!!

    • Has anyone ever been to Easkey south of Sligo?

      Sligo Jul 10, 2004 at 9:57 AM

My husband and I have rented a cottage in Easkey for our base as we explore the coast. I can't find much information on the town except that it's well known for surfing. We also plan on getting up to Killybegs since this is where my ancestors Derry's are from and would love any information on the area from those who have traveled or live there. Thanks! Betsy
