I am attempting to establish a sightseeing trip for our itinerary. We plan to leave Alejuela early AM and travel to Poas for a brief Volcano observation and pics (prior to 0900). From Poas we'd drive to La Paz Waterfall Gardens for a hike to the waterfalls and through the "zoo area". Planning to depart La Paz by 1430, so as to arrive at Arenal Lodge just before dark. The questions are; Is this viable? What do you suppose the drive times and best routes are along the way? Would we be better off eliminating Poas altogether - since we intend on hiking Cerro Chato and will be staying at the base of Arenal anyway? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
I would recommend against trying to do both Poas and La Paz n the same day on the way to Arenal. For one thing the roads are winding, narrow, and filled with potholes in places, so it will take longer than you might anticipate. Second, I think yo will feel rushed. And third, you don't want to get caught driving at night on the way to Arenal- signage and lighting are not good and you don't want to get lost in the pitch dark.

Hi, read your post and I had been in Costa Rica several times, sure you can do it, just keep in mind you should go up really early to be at the Volcano when it opens 8am , most of the time you spend 1hr there so, you will be out around 9am. Driving from the Volcano to La Paz it takes 30 minutes so you will start the tour at 940am at La Paz Waterfall Gardens, once there it takes around 3 hrs to visit the butterfly garden, hummingbird, frog pond, the waterfalls, etc so you will be out at 1pm you can even have lunch there and take off at 2pm the road it is not in good shape because it was an earthquake in the area 4 yrs ago so you will find a bad roads with no signs so I will recommend you to drive during the day. If you get out of La Paz at 2pm you will be at Arenal around 6pm (it gets dark after 530-6pm) Have a nice time while in Costa Rica!!!!
