Is the Nicoya Peninsula is effected by sewage problems?
I've heard reports of sewage problems in the manuel antonia/quepos area, jaco, playa panama, and especially tamarindo and the papagayo area. I'm wondering, is this sewage problem quite common on the beaches of costa rica, or is it more a situation of a few isolated incidents?
Can anyone recommend a resource that lists beaches in costa rica which are free of sewage issues?
Found this on a surfing/diving website:-
"it is not recommended to swim in the ocean at Puntarenas due to water contamination from the river that runs into it. Sewage goes directly into the river which then flows into the ocean. The cabbage smell and lack of anyone especially locals in the water are a clear indication.
The same website also mentions the strong tides and riptides ...so the rule seems to be if theres no one local in the water theres a good reason why

I think it's more isolated incidents...we just returned from Costa Rica and stayed in Samara (Guanacoste Province) and the water was just fine. Playa Samara, Playa Carrillo and I forget the name of the other one in the area, but very clean and no issues. As was mentioned, riptides can be a issue.

Look for beaches that have been awarded 'blue flags' as these are given for water quality amongst other factors. A few beaches have had sewerage problems but usually following heavy rainfall. Avoid swimming near river mouths entering the ocean to be on the safe side.
