Hi, a friend and I wish to travel from La Paz in Bolivia to Corumba on the western edge of the Pantanal (and then onwards to Iguazu Falls). Can anyone tell me if there is a decent route with some form of public transport for this journey? Would it need to be booked in advance or turn up on the day? Approximate costs would be much appreciated too if possible. Many thanks Avalon
You should take a bus from La Paz to Santa Cruz de la Sierra (possible with change of bus in Cochombamba). From Santa Cruz d. Sierra take a train to Corumba. Well actually the train stops on the Bolivian side and you have to take a cab or a local bus across the river to Brazil (not difficult). I would expect the whole trip to take about 2-3 days, and I don't think you need to book in advance, but why not try? If you have time, why not enjoy some of the nice cities and landscape that you will pass. I have no idea of the cost, but Bolivia is very cheap, so don't be worrying about a too high price.

Hello Avalon, Good advice you received already. Your trip will probably be better as you take time (if you do have) to travel without a schedulle. Take care, Nilson Paulo

Check the prices for flights from La Paz to Puerto Suarez. Domestic flights in Bolivia are not expensive. Look out for the best rates since there are several carriers competing..From Puerto Suarez only a few km over the frontier to Corumbá in Brazil. Many Pnatanal tours are offered here. From Corumbá good bus connections to Foz do Iguazu, often with a change of the bus. I have no idea of the actual prizes because I was there in 1998.
