2-3 days in Copenhagen

by tracyskf Online Now Apr 12, 2012 at 11:23 PM

Hi If I have 2-3 days for Copenhagen will this be sufficient? Are there daily excursions or is it easy to just walk around on my own? Would it be better to visit Denmark another time when I have a week or more? Is end April / early May good time for visit? Thanks!

2-3 days isn't enough for you to roam the city. One week would be the best.

Regardless you are staying 3 days or week I would recommend you to take bus tour "Copenhagen City Hop-on Hop-off Tour" - Copenhagen Things to Do Tip by dplesko

2-3 days is enough to get a taste of Copenhagen. Copenhagen is quite walkable - most attraction are in a radius of about 2 km. The hop on hop off buses are overpriced (DKK 185 for 24 hours). You can buy a CityPass (covering the areas where the hop on hop off buses go - but no guide) for DKK 75. CityPass is valid on all buses, trains, S-trains and Metro in Central Copenhagen (zones 1, 2, 3 and 4 - including the airport).

You can sure get a nice taste of Copenhagen in 2-3 days and early may is not a bad time of year to visit. You have to be prepared for rain and wind no matter what time of year you visit Copenhagen, but you could end up getting nice and sunne eather in early may aswell. On top of the good suggestions you have allready been given i would recommend doing a bicycle tour of Copenhagen if you are comfortble with a bike. This guy does really good tours of the city: http://www.bikecopenhagenwithmike.dk/

Hi Tracy, 2-3 days is plenty for Copers. Do visit the sweet Little mermaid, thus checking out Amelienborg Palace in the vicinity. Ther are other great Palaces & castles too, worth a visit. If you like you beers, get a tour at Carlsberg brewery. Then there's the Round Tower offering all round views of the city from up high, and Vor Frelsers Kirke (The Church of our Saviour) is located at Christianshavn, close to the Free State of Christiania (worth a visit to appreciate the quirky alteranative living there!!). The church can be recognised by its striking tower that features a gold staircase around the outer edge of a black spire. It offers excellent views of Copenhagen and of the island of Christianshavn in particular. You get a bird’s eye view of the famous “free-city” of Christiania from here as well and on a clear day in the distance you can see the Oresund bridge connecting Denmark to Sweden. And do not miss the canal tours - some really low bridges on the route! And maazing buildings, eg the Opera House, etc..

Yes Copenhagen offers lots of things to see or do, so if you go for a few days or more you will have no problems finding things to do. Do also look at the tips people made, sure you can fill up a nice long, like to do list. Enjoy ;-)

Hey Tracy, as the former posters have mentioned, Copenhagen is a great city to visit, even its easy to walk to mostly everywhere as the city is not covered up w hills ... :) besides joining a classic hop on hop off bus tour, concerning little mermaid, rosenberg etc, u can even create ur own tour as most places and areas r designated for pedestrians ... I would also recommend u to check the boat tours, which combine bus tours as a plus w the boats , sothat u can see the city on the water from the famous canals, harbour, fish market and so on ... Enjoy ur time in Copenhagen ... :)

Everyone, Thanks so much - because there is so much to do I have extended this leg of the trip and now I have 4 full days! yay! I think the Carlsberg brewery sounds interesting, according to a guidebook I can just take the bus and head there on my own right? I have questions re: - "There are other great Palaces & castles too, worth a visit." --> i checked it out, there are a few castles, if I can only choose one, which to go for? Hamlet? Can I head there myself rather than joining tour? - "Then there's the Round Tower offering all round views of the city from up high, and Vor Frelsers Kirke (The Church of our Saviour) is located at Christianshavn, close to the Free State of Christiania (worth a visit to appreciate the quirky alteranative living there!!)." --> where is this round tower? I'd like to go. I am staying near central station hope it is easy to walk around? Since I have 4 days now, is there anything else that I should cover?

You can easily go to the Carlsberg breweries. the easiest thingis to take the suburbian train called the "S-Tog" to "Enghave Station" and then you only have a short walk from there. To visit Hamlets castle you can also go by yourself easily. The castle is in the town Helsingør (Elsinore in english) and if you take the train to there (which will take you around 40 minutes from central Copenhagen then you can easily walk from Helsingør train station. You can see the castle as you exit the train station in Helsingør. Another castle worth visiting is Rosenborg which is in downtown Copenhagen next to Nøreport station. That is a small but very scenic castle that has the danish crownjewels in the basemwnt. The round tower is right in downtown Copenhagen in the street "Købmagergade" and you can walk there easily from any spot in the old part of Copenhagen.

Yes, you can easily go to Carlsberg Visitor Centre - either by bus or S-train. visitcarlsberg.dk/Pages/fron... If you can only choose one castle I would go for Rosenborg Castle in the heart of Copenhagen (quite near to Round Tower - Rundetårn). On a day trip you could take the train to Helsingor - visit Kronborg Castle (Hamlet) - then take the train to Hillerod - visit Frederiksborg Castle - take the S-train back to Copenhagen. A 24 hour all zones ticket (DKK 130) is cheapest option for transport (don't forget to validate the ticket before your first trip). Round Tower - Rundetårn is in Købmagergade (a side street to Strøget) in the heart of Copenhagen.

Thanks everyone! I have checked out the places and directions mentioned. They are all very helpful! A couple more questions: - I will go to Helsingor for Kronborg Castle - how much time do i allocate for this, will it be easily a full day trip? (Can this also be done in a day with Frederiksborg?) - I also read on Viking Ship, Roskilde and Frederiksborg Slot, Hillerod. Are these 2 doable within a day? If not and I have to choose one, which one is recommended? - I read i can reach Central station easily by Metro from the airport. Is this easy to do with a big bag? - I read on the CPH Card - it is worth getting it? If yes, should I get 72 hours or 120 hours given that I have 4 full days in CPH. Thanks!

The train from Copenhagen Central to Helsingor takes 44 minutes. The walk from the station to Kronborg takes approx. 20 minutes. 2 hours at the castle is plenty of time. The train from Helsingor to Hillerod takes 30 minutes. The walk from the station to Frederiksborg Castle takes approx. 20 minutes (or you can take bus 301 part of the way). 2-3 hours for the castle and the gardens should be plenty of time. The S-train back from Hillerod to Copenhagen Central takes 39 minutes. The Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde is worth a visit (and also the cathedral in Roskilde). Only direct connection from Roskilde to Hillerod is by bus (it's often faster going by train and S-train via Copenhagen). It's doable in a day, but combining Helsingor and Hillerod will be better. The Metro does not go to Copenhagen Central, but trains do. They run minimum every 20 minutes and the journey takes 13-14 minutes. Easily done even with large luggage. The value of cOPENhagen CARD depends on how many of the places that give free entrance you intend to visit. For transport only there are cheaper options available. visitcopenhagen.com/book-you...
