Can you give any confirmation that the Flannery Brothers erected a monument to Cook on the beach early 1900's. They were her uncles. Doreen aged 93 said it withstood the sea and still existed.
Hi, There is certainly a Cook Monument in Cooktown. Whether it was erected by the Flannery Brothers I don't know. It was erected in 1887 - not to far from the years you mention. There is a picture of it here - perhaps Doreen will will recognise it . http://www.panoramio.com/photo/32038153 And some, but not a lot of comment on it here cooktownmotel.com/cooktown-g... and a bit more on the history of Cooktown here naturespowerhouse.com.au/abo... Hope this helps and perhaps someone here has seen the monument lately. Albert

We spent 2 days in Cooktown about 15 months ago and I have some photos of the TWO monuments to Cook and his beaching of the Endeavour on the banks of the river. I have a tip on those monuments at "Monuments - Captain Cook and Cooks Landing Place" - Cooktown Things to Do Tip by sirgaw I've checked my photo collection of that trip to see if there is a mention of the Flannery Brothers - sorry, no info. The National Trust have a great museum in Cooktown - see nationaltrust.org.au/qld/jam... but there is no e mail address shown. Maybe follow that link and send an e mail to the HQ of the National Trust in Qld. The museum has a phone number 07 4069 5386 but the web site shows that the museum may be closed parts of Feb and March. Good luck
